Cheap alternative for whiter teeth!

I came across a posting where was suggested as an alternative for whitenning teeth the following receipe:
3 tb baking soda+1 tbs salt+peroxide hydrogen

Brush the mixture on your teeth!

ANyone familiar with this home receipe?

I know baking soda and peroxide work well, I don't know about salt

1) how well (fast) does it work?
2) is it better than just spending 3 bucks for whitening toothpaste?
