11/29/2002
TORONTO (CP) - Mike Mihelic, a CFL player with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, was among six people charged with various drug and weapons offences following police raids this week.
Mihelic, 29, was arrested Wednesday when Toronto and Halton Regional police drug squads conducted raids on homes and businesses in Mississauga and Milton.
Police say during a search of a Milton-area residence, large quantities of anabolic steroids, both in pill and injectable form, were seized, along with pill-making machines and packaging materials. A large marijuana grow-operation was dismantled at the same location.
Mihelic was charged with conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, producing a controlled substance (steroids) and possession of marijuana.
Mihelic and the others appeared in court in Toronto on Thursday.
The raids capped a month-long investigation.
Mihelic, a six-foot-four, 245-pound Toronto native, is a six-year CFL veteran who completed his third season with Hamilton in 2002.
The CFL does not have a drug-testing program in place.
Also charged were Rui Manuel DaSilva, 34, of Oakville, Ont., Alberto DaSilva, 61, also of Oakville, Christopher D. Humphrey, 35, of London, Ont., Patricia Lincez, 33, of Mississauga, Ont., and Zorianna Iason, 24, of Oakville.
