Cat owners/experts...need your input (medically related)

calveless wonder

New member
had to take a friend's cat to the vet today (not gonna bother to get into why).

He's had a sore in his mouth and it didn't look right. so when the dr took a look at him he used the word "tumor" but said it was localized. It was on the bottom part of his tongue, but surprisingly he's been able to eat fine etc. Because the cat is only two years old, he didn't think it was of the malignant variety but he wasn't all that reassuring in his tone.

His vagueness scared the shit out of me, and all he did was give the cat an antibiotic shot and said that hopefully it should go down. Said if it gets worse or bleeds or he can't eat, to bring him back immediately otherwise check up on him in two weeks.

This cat is basically like a step-cat to me, so I'm a bit concerned and wanted to know if anyone had experiences or knowledge of mouth sores. The doc hypothesized maybe it was a wound or injury since he's an outdoor cat and that sprung the problem.

After reading on the Internet I'm kinda worried. The doctor said worst case they might need to excise it and it'd mean removing part of his tongue

paging dr chris.......

surely he has some diagnoses....

srsly tho...I have no idea, hope that cat gets better....you try dr google?

Dr Google actually made me more nervous than I already was.

The problem with something like that is the spectrum of what it can be is so large

it tends to do that.....

I have to ask..if its not bothering the cat how was it even noticed?

is it a hematoma? big red lookin thing?
my exes dog gets them on his ears...I thought it was tumor the first time he got one and I freaked...I mean, I know what hematomas look like but black skin and fur isn't my thing (no racist)
rationally if it just appeared out of nowhere its unlikely to be a malignancy (I think)

Big bubble looking red thing.

how about getting a second opinion? I think I would if I were highly concerned which it sounds like you are. I would stay away from the internet for diagnosing though.

Hope the kitty gets better.

just follow the doc's orders. if its an infection the anti-biotics should do their thing. if not, you'll be able to tell in 2 weeks. bring em back for a check up then and see what the doc says.

thanx...I got sick of looking at the balloon belly........crabby at it after bein on the toco for an hr and a half today

Agreed! and if it's still there ask for a Biopsy so you will know what to do before it gets worse . I have 4 cats and they are like family to me.

On a side note, I came home and my cat looked at me like I was a fuckin alien. Then she growled and hissed at me like a snake for 4 hours straight.

Keep in mind she's either waiting and watching for me from the windows or is waiting by the door. She greets me like a dog and rolls around on the floor till I stop petting her. She sleeps with me, follows me around the house and tries to get my attention like a dog to play with her half the day.

I'm not sure if it was the ton of cat hair I had on my shirt or just the smell of the vet office, but she was livid. Never seen her like that. I always come home from other peoples houses with pets and she'll sniff at me first but never anything like this.

I hope the little guy is okay. I don't have much to offer 'cause I've never really had to deal with much in the way of cat health issues.

I wonder if it could just be a mucocele?

I hope the cat is OK too.
I watched as someone's dog got a (cancerous) tumour on it's foot and it grew and grew. The dog went to the vet at least three or four times to get it removed, but it kept coming back, and finally the vet said they had to euthanize it.
It took a long time for this to happen, but bear in mind the first time this dog went to the vet, the vet said it was a piece of gravel stuck in its pad, and to "wait and see".
When you go back in two weeks, I'd ask for a biopsy or a blood test of some kind.

Well atleast if it is something horrible, we as a society have enough respect and compassion for animals that we are allowed to provide them euthanasia. It's a shame we cannot offer the same compassion to our fellow man.
