Interesting .....

In a recent study in the Annals of Nutrition and Metabolism, they compared the effects of a moderate diet, high-protein diet and resistance training, using two different protein supplements, or the diet alone on body compositional changes in overweight police officers (1). It was a randomized 12-week study. One group was placed on a hypocaloric diet alone (80% of maintenance). A second group was placed on the hypocaloric diet plus resistance exercise plus a high-protein intake (1.5 g/kg/day) using a casein protein hydrolysate. In the third group treatment was identical to the second, except for the use of a whey protein hydrolysate. They found no difference in total weight loss between groups (about 5.5 lbs. for all groups). Mean percent body fat with diet alone decreased from 27 to about 25% at 12 weeks. With diet, exercise and casein the decrease was from 26 to about 18%, and with diet, exercise and whey protein the decrease was from 27 to about 23%. So the mean fat loss was 2.5 (no protein supplement), 7.0 (casein supplement) and 4.2 kg (whey supplement) in the three groups. Lean mass gains in the three groups did not change for diet alone, versus gains of about 4 kg in the casein group and 2 kg in the whey group. Mean increase in strength for chest, shoulder and legs was 59% for casein versus 29% for whey, a statistically significant difference.

i bought some of the chocolate calcium casseinate from proteinfactory, flavored w/ splenda. It tastes decent. I bought some vanilla as well but haven't tried it yet.

I bought the exact same thing as Risky. I thought it was sorta hard to get myself to eat it, it is kinda like trying to eat rancid flax oil, but not as bad. It did not really dissolve in water when I attempted with to mix it with a spoon, but I haven't tried any advanced methods like a shaker or blender. I'm a little disappointed, I was hoping that it would taste better. I am use to eating Optimum's 100% whey chocolate flavor. If optimum's whey is a 10(which it is probably not by most peoples standards, but just pretend) then PF's calcium casineate+splenda+choc flavor+water is no more than a 3. Pretending Metrx MRP's choc. flavoris a 10(which taste better than optimum 100% wheyprotein choc.), then the latter mixture is not even a 1. Compared to Muscletech's Meso-tech choc. bars, the casinate I ate tasted like poo-poo.This is just my opinion, I had the same questions before I bought it, so just answering hoping it will help. I am not a milk drinker either, that may be a factor. In fact, I sorta feel like I"m in the environment of cow's, like in a farm, when I eating casein.

I use the milk protein isolate from the protein factory, 80% caseine 20% whey, vanilla with splenda and it tastes good.

I don't know guys but i really like the taste of the chocoloate cassein from proteinfactory flavored w/ splenda. I take a big cup fill half w/ milk, add a scoop of cassein, then the other half w/ water and mix w/ a spoon. No problems mixing and fills the belly nicely before sleep. Haven't tried the vanilla yet i'll let you guys know if it's horrible or not.

i notice a diffrence when i use a shake with casein vs a whey one

what difference ?

Yeah you will see changes if you maintain anabolism versus catabolism. It's not restricted to cassein though, you can eat any source of protein and maintain anabolism as long as you eat frequently enough. Cassein is good b/c it stays much longer in the system, which keeps will try to keep you anabolic longer. Good for gains. But like i said you can eat real food and get same effects, that's good to know for all the bros out here who are trying to make ends meet.

Thats a huge difference (assuming the study was done somewhat properly). By the way, do you have the source of this information? I'd be pretty interested in reading through the details of how it was performed.

Check Medline. Or search the MFW newsgroup. Lyle McDonald(Yes, I mention him every other post but I think he's the best source of no-bullshit info for nutrition out there.) has written a fair bit about this subject/study. He also has a great couple of articles on his website--though not much else.

It's located here:

very interesting stuff, i thought the guy was an idiot. He obviously knows his stuff. That's a great read, i couldn't finish but when i have time i gotta sit down and read it carefully.

I know this is an old post but I had to respond. The study used HYDROLIZED CASEIN not just plain casein. Hydrolized casein is a fast digesting protein. Calcuim caseinate, etc. are slow acting. Why does everyone think because they used hydro casein will be the same as regular casein. Then everyon says slow digesting is better because of the study. Try adding some hydro casein to you mixes. In small amounts. I have another question about whey. The article by Lyle said whey peaked about an hour after ingestion and then started coming down at about 4 hours. The subjects in the test fasted as well which changes the speed at which protein is digested. Where does everyone come up with whey digesting in 15 or 20 minutes. What studies? Between meals whey should digest at a slow enough rate especially if you still have any undigested food left too.
