carrying a gun?

Ok, suppose you have a gun and a permit for it, but not a concealed permit. I'm a little confused on this, where in the car should you carry it? or can you carry it? should it be in plain view? wouldn't an officer freak out if he walked up and seen a gun on the dash? whats the best way to go about this. Reason is im going on a long road trip and was taking it with me, just to have there in the room. what are the best ways?

You can also go to the NRA website. They have a section in which they list the gun laws of all 50 states. Good reference tool.

Of course get a concealed weapons permit and register the gun. When you hand the officer your license you also hand him a NRA card that declares that you own a weapon and have a permit for it.

The safest legal way to carry it is in a locked container out of reach, such as the trunk. But then again, if you feel like you may need a gun you are going to want the fastest access to it as possible in case shit goes down.

From a legal and practical standpoint, you really cant win. Criminals dont follow the laws. I dont see the benefit to carrying a gun if doing so is in any way related to illegal activity.

1. Armed trafficking is alot worse than Poss w/i/s/d
2. You usually wont have time to run to the trunk to "pull your gun."
3. Murder. manslaughter, and involuntary manslaughter charges all suck.
4. Getting killed really sucks.

I dont go anywhere if I feel like I really may need a gun. A knife on the other hand....:D

To the best of my knowledge, and just speaking from New York law, unless you're going to and from the pistol range, you should not be carrying the pistol. And that is further limited to the county. Of course, in NY it's virtually impossible to obtain a CCW unless you transport large amounts of cash as part of your business.

In any event, the others have all made good suggestions. As retemple and Immortal indicate, keep the weapon in its closed case in the trunk of your car or the back of your SUV. Although I would disagree about advising a police officer about such if you're stopped for merely a traffic violation. In my opinion, present your license, registration and proof of insurance and no more. Remain calm, be reasonable, don't say anything incriminating (But sir, I was only five MPH over the speed limit... DOH!), plead your case, ask for only a warning this time and you may just go on your way with one.

Regards,

RW

Keep in mind that because you have a permit in one state, doesn't mean that permit is valid in another state. As a former cop, if I walked up and saw a gun in plain view on your dash, the last thing I'm concerned with is whether you have a permit or not. We'll talk about that later. Find out the laws of each state, many of them don't care if your licensed from another state, fine way to end up in jail.
