What do you guys think of this??

Since doing cardio in a fasted state is better (ie 1st thing in the am) I was thinking of still doing my cardio in a fasted state but right after work.....so if I eat my last meal no later than 2:00pm, leave work at 4:00pm - do my cardio then *right away* drink my PWO shake, THEN I'd do my weights.....

Thoughts?

I can't see a problem with that. I do that some days when I find it hard to get out with the baby being awake. It hasn't hurt me and have still managed to loose some weight doing this. I did it that way straight after baby was born as I found he sleeped better in the afternoons. I lost 4kgs (approx 8lbs) in the first 2 months post baby with afternoon fasting then cardio.

Just a thought though -- I see the point but what about the pre-fatigue you'll put on your muscles doing cardio before lifting? I think the fasting description is a good one... but I'd hate to see you lift immediately after and sacrifice potential gains because you wore yourself out. Does that make sense? Unless you're planning to put a couple hours space between cardio and lifting in the eveing too...?

No I was going to lift right after cardio and I'd drink my PWO shake right after the cardio - so I was hoping that'd give me some energy or the strength to lift.....

I have enough issues with sleep as it is - I wanted to avoid losing more sleep than I had to by getting up early to do am cardio.....

Didn't know if this would work from a comp prep standpoint tho....

I'd wait and see what the other ladies say. I have heard so many darn times "DO NOT lift after cardio, always vice versa" that I'm programmed to repeat it. :)

What about lifting after work, having the shake (when the muscle fibers are open and ready for it) and then doing the cardio after that? Oh wait... then you won't be fasting anymore for cardio. Duh. :splat:

On the weekends, I lift first thing and immediately go to cardio all on an empty stomach. I would think your plan is great -- maybe just try it out and see how your lifts compare to what you were doing WITHOUT the cardio before? :whatever:

I is trying to smart be. :D

Yeah, me too....

Another thing I was thinking about the cardio is is that when I first get to the gym, the cardio machines are EMPTY and by the time I'm done my cardio there is a line & it stays that way till after 6:00pm.....

So doing it first will allow me to get er dun & in a fasted state....I figured my supps will carry me thru my whole workout regardless.....

I find it hard to get a good workout in if I lift after cardio. Almost like all my energy is gone from working hard on cardio. I try to split the two up. Would it work for you to do lifting in the AM and the cardio when you get home from work? Or are you trying to combine all in one?

I'm trying to avoid getting up early & losing decent sleep to do AM cardio - so I'm trying to find the most effective way of doing both after work....

Hmmm...my guess would be to try it for a week and see how it goes. If you are finding that you are too tired after cardio to do weights, maybe do cardio right after work then wait 2-3 hours and do weights. Not sure what your family situation is or if your schedule allows for that, but I have done that before and did ok with it.

First I want to say that this is strictly anecdotal:

If you do cardio and then weights, it will take away from your workout because the muscle glycogen that you use to do your weight training will be depleted. When taking a shake right after your cardio to restore the glycogen, digestion of the protein will be occuring, taking blood into the stomach and away from the muscles. It will effect your workout, especially if you are taking in protein with your shake.

If you are doing weights, do them first. Your metabolic rate is increased by weight training and the cardio after will further boost your metabolism. It is not optimal for fat loss, but it is effective, just not AS effective. Remember, calories in has to be less than calories out and that is just not about calorie restriction, it is through activity too.

I know fukkenshredded does his cardio first, but that guy is a mutant.

HEY JENSCATS!

I think you will be fine ; why dont you try doing the cardio before weights only 2-3 times a week and do AM cardio 2 days a week that way 5 days you are still getting good sleep and getting a good mix of stuff; and maybe switch around the bodyparts that you are doing cardio beforehand for example: if you do cardio before back and shoulders one week ; do it before chest and arms the next. ?

when I start to miss sleep and keep pushing through it I get burnout symptoms and they last FOREVER (which is like 3-4 months.)

I'm not the expert tho but i know sometimes the details can become tedious and I just got to do what works for me. :)

Honestly......I dont think a lot of that idea.

1 - You shouldn't do cardio before weights.

2 - You shouldnt eat IMMEDIATELY after cardio as you lose the after burn - especially if you are doing HIIT

3 - You dont want to lift AFTER the PWO shake

what is the issue with, assuming you cant do am cardio, doing weights immediately after work, then cardio.....then a PWO a couple of hours later?

No issue really, other than getting a cardio machine (my gym is literally PACKED) and whether it mattered during comp. prep in doing cardio in a fasted state or not.....

I can lift 1st then do cardio or vice versa, just wondered if my original idea had any merit or not or was better or worse than doing weights then cardio....
