Cardio or weights or both..

ck2006

New member
so which is better for me to do?

1. cardio in the morning, weights at night
2. weights and then cardio in the morning
3. Cardio in the morning, weights at night followed by more cardio

The reason I ask is I had full intensions of doing cardio first thing this morning on an empty stomach but the kids are getting in the way of my plans LOL, now its getting later and I am not sure whether just to do both and get it out of the way or stick to my plan of cardio in the morning and weights at night

Thanks

ck, I think you should just do it after your workout. No HIIT or anything, but a steady pace. Basically, it is not ideal for you to be running to the gym 2x a day when you have a family you need to attend to.

Just do it after your workout and be done with it. Try to train & do your cardio a couple of hours after you eat. If you're doing cardio and start feeling really hungry....just stop. That's your body telling you you've had enough - and then EAT! :)

I have a treadmill at home, but that makes sense. I just thought I would try the whole cardio in the morning, before the girls got up, but they have RADAR, arrrrr.

So one more question, I always thought you should eat your protein shake right before weights?? not true, keep it a couple of hours before the weights?

All depends on your goals and what you have time for.

If you can swing #1 the am cardio and pm weight training I'd say go for that since fat loss is your goal (& some muscle loss is not of concern). Also you feel energized & rev'd up when you start your day with some activity.
#2 I love to do, many people cant though. #3 I think is going to be too much for you with the kids, studying, and all the other stuff you do with your super mom schedule.

If you can swing a fews days HIIT and few days steady state for cardio, the variety will be good for you.

:rose:

You will hear conflicting advice on pwo carbs, but generally if I were you I would have my protein shake (usually with carbs) POST workout with weights... small liquid meal that can be digested & absorbed quickly.

I think there's no "The Best Way" - you can "optimize" yourself right into an undoable lifestyle. Me personally - I don't do protein shakes anymore so there's no "you shoudl do this or that shake at exactly this or that time" --- my point being - sure there's what people suggest, what the 'studies' say is optimal, etc. but the point is to just do what works in your lifestyle or what your time on that particular day allows.

Me personally - I don't like to lift on an empty stomach for obvious reasons, but I may not always want to lift immediately after I eat either- I may give myself an hr or less to digest and then go lift. If i know I'm going to pass the 2-3 hr pt in my lifting before my next meal, I'll bring some food w/ me cuz I know I'm goign to practically pass out on the way home. The point is for training you don't want to be lifting on an empty stomach. So eat something and however long prior to lifting that allows your stomach to be comfortably settled.

It is then recommended to do the shake + simple carbs within 30-60 min after training and then a regular meal within an hr after that.

HIIT on empty(am) is best option for fat loss

so - of the ones you listed, there is a "best" choice and that is option 1 - at least imo.....

I prefer a good sustained protein source like pbutter or a small serving of nuts

lots of people sip on gatorade etc....

have mixed feelings about that and dont recommend it in a fat loss setting

I think the best option is the option you can be consistent with. People search and search for that magic answer when it is as simple as doing something at times. Train and do cardio. Whenever you can. :)

Thanks :) Ok now why the 'fat' and not a carb pre workout ?
(yes im playing Q & A)

Thank you guys soooo much.

Well today I trained chest and tris 3x8 (time being the reason) and then did 30 minutes cardio
warm up for 5 ran at 4.5 for a minute and then walked at 4.0 for a minute. By no means was it a HIIT, but I think I will do steady cardio 3x a week and HIIT 3x a week.

This morning I got up and so did the girls  so I ate 3 egg whites and some cranberries, and then I had to wait until my boy went to school so I had a protein shake and soy milk cause it was fast and easy. Then I did weights and then cardio.

Now I am going to eat a pbutter sandwich with whole wheat bread??? good choice?

thanks again everyone

Eh....pwo I don't think that'll hurt ya' much....BUT......ideally pwo - simple carb and protein.

Fat is not the best choice post-WO. Fat is not an easily accessable energy source, and you want to replenish your muscles as quick as possible.

I am not a fan of doing weights and cardio in the same gym session. I prefer doing cardio and weights separately.

Why so much cardio? I love cardio, but even that is more than I am doing to lose fat .....

Yeah rule of thumb is to keep fats and carbs seperate as much as possible. Mixing basically makes it easier to store the fats. So have something super sweet and enjoy but keep it fat free PWO.

Its that the fat delays the carbs hitting the bloodstream - in a PWO scenario - thats not optimal

Bodyfat cannot be burned in the presence of elevated insulin levels

^^Biochemical factoid.

So - in a fat loss scenario - you want to keep sugar blood levels as low as possible

so... you guys are saying the pbutter and whole wheat wasn't the best choice? Toooo much technical, break it down for me please LOL.

I think I got it, but does the fat in peanut butter raise your insulin levels?

Yeah it does slow down carb digestion but also increases the propensity for fat storage.

this is the thing:

2 times you do NOT want fat:

1 - first meal
2 - pwo

why??

you want to get nutrients(carbs) into the system as quickly as possible.....

Fat slows that down......

Now - concerning pbuter.....backin the day - I did an experiment.....I held some pbutter in my mouth for 60 seconds and did a blood sugar reading....

SImple holding the pbutter bumped blood sugar levels.......thats a story for another day - had nothing to do with your example

NO FAT IMMEDIATELY AFTER A WORKOUT

PWO - CARBS AND PROTEIN

tuna and apple is fine

pssssttt...

btw - a preworkout meal of apple and pbutter is fine...fat slows down that sugar hit

NO FAT IMMEDIATELY AFTER A WORKOUT

WARNING ..... Thread hijack in progress .....

S - question here, here is my first meal
Cream of Wheat made with 1/2c Skim milk, 1/4c water
3 egg whites, 2 whole eggs

I plan on eating this even after HIIT FTITM. Not a good idea?

I worry that without the fat, I will get hungry FAST FAST FAST.

ALSO ......

Could my higher blood sugar levels be ONE of the reasons I am having trouble losing fat? And those levels will go down as I clean up the diet and start losing lbs?

DROP THE FAT IMMEDIATELY FROM THAT MEAL......

ADD THE TWO EGGS A BIT LATER 30-45 AFTER THE FIRST HIT

YOU CAN ALWAYS BOIL THEM THE NIGHT BEFORE AND HAVE THE EGGS BEFORE THE WORKOUT...THIS WILL SPARE LEAN MASS LOSS AS WELL

YES....We talked about the trigly being high....its a sign of out of whack glucose management...and yes - they should drop......especially with the ala
