Carbohydrates reduce IGF-1 levels. How can this be?

The following study states that:

'serum levels of IGF-1 are independently and positively associated with energy intake from lipids and negatively associated with energy intake from carbohydrates.'

http://jco.ascopubs.org/cgi/content/full/17/10/3291

I always was led to believe that IGF-1 was raised by high glycemic carbohydrates. But it seems that this is not true and instead the opposite is true.

It seems that fats and proteins are what raise IGF-1 levels.

Thoughts?

this why a carb only post workout drink doesnt do the trick. research shows the best combination is carb (high glycemic)/protein/BCAA/antioxidant drink immediately following your workout spikes the neessary insuin to transport aminos for increased protein synthesis and incrased igf levels.

this book i have called Nutrient Timing is geared toward bodybuilders and references all the studies that show this. they go on to further show the comparisons with water only, carb only, protein only and the vaious combinations on gh, igf, insulin, etc.

i dont have the book with me but i can quote it later if u like.

GH and insulin are antagonistic hormones, so when insulin is high (triggered the most by simple carbs and some amino acids), GH will be low.

GH triggers IGF-1 to be released from the liver.

^^ what she said

this is also why going to sleep with an empty stomach is important when cutting, because the absense of insulin maximizes the GH pulse when you hit deep sleep stage

effectively what you've said is that when people eat simple carbs growth hormone is low

therefore, IGF-1 is also low

that correct?

therefore if one were to reduce IGF-1 one should eat a large amount of high glycemic carbs?

And if one wanted to raise IGF-1 one should eat a minimal amount of carbs and a massive about of protein and fat (according to the study).

Just eating triggers insulin to be released.

Some amino acids are called glucogenic, and they have the insulin kick off pretty good as well.

All carbohydrates are broken down to glucose, just at different rates.

This whole low and high GI stuff is completely artificial, as how often are you, as a bodybuilder, going to eat a carbohydrate on its own?

There are simple and complex carbs, the GI thing was designed to help diabetics, and it has been superceeded by another way of describing the impact of food on blood sugar levels called glycaemic load.

I wouldn't worry to much about GI unless you are eating shed loads of refined sugar.
