my girl's has had a history of nephrotic syndrome (kidney disorder) so she cant take in too much protein. she's looking to lose around 10-15 pounds, what kind of diet should she have ... ? she's 5'1 and around 112 pounds.

her goal is to be able to loose that extra fat in her tummy (particularly her lower abs) , thighs and arms.

thanks guys !

1. Can you get her on here?
2. What's her diet like now? (If it's not so great, I've always found great results & quickly just from eating more CLEAN).
3. Does she have any idea how much protein is too much?
4. What are her workouts like?

Yup, you can't 'spot reduce' (control where you will lose fat from) & there's no such thing as 'lower abs' - the rectus abdominus (6-pack muscle) is ONE long muscle.

On a side note -most women have at least a bit of fat under the belly button - it's nothing to stress over. It drives me batty how in every porn movie the ladies are FLAT from breasts down to crotch (even though their bf% is clearly not very low) - women are just not made like that! Having realistic expectations of what you want your body to look like is always helpful.

It's called liposuction :mix: :mix:

Need a lot more info...

Do you know what's causing the syndrome? Has she been tested for diabetes, lupus, high blood fats etc...?
Is she on any medications or special diet at the moment? Does she have fluid retention problems? We really need the whole story to help with a diet.

Overall she will need to eat less calories than she burns to lose fat, and shell need to undertake some resistance training to ensure that she loses more fat than muscle. Keep sodium and protein low, carbs from whole grains, legumes and fibrous fruits and veggies, and most of her fats from fish or high quality vegetable oils and nuts.

i just talked to my girl a while ago and she really cant get on elite coz she's not too fond of the computer :p

anyway ill try to answer your questions the best i can coz i printed it out for her and let her give me her answers.

her doctor told her that she had some type of swollen kidney ... its okay now but her kidney's kinda weak so the doctor only told her to "avoid" eating "too much" protein ...

3. Does she have any idea how much protein is too much?
not really ... sorry :( the doctor didnt give any specifics ...

4. What are her workouts like?
well 45 minutes cardio ... then the usual machines you find in the gym ... no free weights though ...

nephrotic syndrome in a nutshell

A person with the nephrotic syndrome has these signs:

High levels of protein in the urine
Low levels of protein in the blood
Swelling resulting from buildup of salt and water.
The nephrotic syndrome is not itself a disease. But it can be the first sign of a disease that damages the tiny blood-filtering units (glomeruli) in the kidneys, where urine is made.

The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs found in the lower back. They are about the size of a fist. They clean the blood by filtering out excess water and salt and waste products from food. Healthy kidneys keep protein in the blood, which helps the blood soak up water from tissues. But kidneys with damaged filters may let protein leak into the urine. As a result, not enough protein is left in the blood to soak up the water. The water then moves from the blood into body tissues and causes swelling.

dont know the real shit with this nephrotic blah blah ... but basically this is what it is ....

My question was not "what is nephrotic syndrome", but what is causing HER problems. If the doc has not even looked into the causes of problem then her doc is an idiot and she should seek specialist help.

Can I assume from your lack of response that she is NOT on any medications for this problem, and that her doc has not tested her for the most common causes such as diabetes, lupus, Hep B/C or immune disorders?? And she obviously hasn't had a biopsy?? Does she suffer from swelling of the face and ankles, maybe abdomen, does she have high blood pressure, high cholesterol or any other abnormal blood work??

The answers to these questions are important. If she has problems with fluid swelling then she needs to ditch the junk food ASAP and get her salt intake down. She should do this anyway if she's trying to lose fat!! If she has diabetes.....oh never mind. It doesn't matter, just tell her to eat like I outlined above, with 3 days of protein at 35g per day follwed by 2 days at 70g per day, then back down to 35 for 3 days etc.......set calories at 1200 per day to begin with and see how she goes. And NO JUNK FOOD. Nothing that's processed or in a can or frozen or from a fast food joint. In fact nothing that isn't WHOLE grain, fruits or veggies, and low salt. No dairy products. Consider getting as much of her protein as possible from free form essential aminos instead of whole foods. If she's serious about her long term health then now is the time to take control. And she really needs to ask more questions next time she goes to the doc.
