i.e.

Hushmail say's they offer secure email services but why is it every time i try to send a encrypted message to yahoo.. hotmail .. any where... I get "can not send message, cannot find public keys for encryption" ? then it goes on to say "would you like to send unecrypted ?"

Am I missing something in the configuration here ??

any info appreciated ..

mb

the only thing you're missing is:
encrypted site to encypted site = ENCRYPTED email! (not the best though)

now...if you use same-site encrypted to same-site encrypted this will be your BEST means of encryption!!!!

for example: elitefitness to ziplip = pretty good encryption

elitefitness to elitefitness = excellent encryption

elitefitness to aol = no encryption!!!!

get it????

now---where's my karma

ONEANDTHESAME: you got more karma then you need!!! Give me 1/2 yours damnit! LOL! Thanks for the karma and I'm glad this helps!!!
Peace!

I've always heard that it has to be the same encrypted email in order to work. Like Elite to elite = encrypted mail
Ziplip to Ziplip = encrypted mail.
Hushmail to Hushmail= encrypted mail

Elite to Ziplip = no encrypted mail and like wise for Ziplip to Elite.
Hushmail to Ziplip = no encrypted mail and like wise when your not using the same type of mail.

Bottem line on what I've heard is that the mail being sent or received has to be from the same place in order to be secure.

I don't think a lot of people really know this eithor.

You are correct sir.

Mail between two different secure mail service providers is not secure. Even mail sent between two users of the same secure service has its problems, but those proplems are only the result of a user's carelessness. I think hushmail stores your mail, in your mailbox, encrypted but it was definitely unencrypted when it left ziplip, squatmail, etc.

You can get point-to-point encrypted mail regardless of the service provider used. You just need to use PGP (with Outlook or your Web based mail provider). Unfortunately, this comes at the price of anonymity as PKI organizations require you to provide considerable identification before listing you on their keyring, so in this case your mail will be encrypted but it would be possible for law enforcement to at least figure out to whom you had been communicating. Now if you want to go to a lot of effort you can establish a fake identity and obtain public keys which you could use to communicate between service providers. Of course, this is only fun if you can convince others to do the same…

PGP does NOT require any legitimate personal information! That is patently untrue.

PGP is the best t use and I suggest everyone use it with everything they do that is sensitive! It is not that hard to use if you just give it a minute!

PGP only works when you are sending to another user that has PGP. It's called public/private key encryption. You encrypt with the recipients public key and when they receive the message they decrypt it with their private key.

To send encrypted messages using PGP when the recipient does not have PGP use the SDA function of PGP. SDA (Self Decrypting Archive) allows you to encrypt a file and set a password to it. The recipient only needs the password and will be able to self decrypt and extract the file.

well you'd think that hushmail,ziplip,etc.. would point that out in bold print when you login/signup. I mean shit they say "can't send unencrypted" but they don't give a reason for it.

hate how they leave you hangin like that... good replys guys..

Also, the reason Ziplip doesn't work with Elite and vice versa is because Ziplip will not contain the EF users public key to encrypt it with. Other accounts such as hotmail and yahoo do not use encryption.
Elite to Hushmail should work as they share public keys.

Your right, my bad. I munged pieces togeather. Those pieces being PGP and the policies of most PKI keyring maintainers (Verisign, Entrust, Baltimore Tech). Of course, their goals are very different than those of these readers.

PGP relies on what is known as a Web of Trust to verify keys. Whereas propietary systems use a hierachichal system, wherein the Certificate Authority, Certificate Revocation Lists and Registration Authority hold the power to verify keys.

seems to me the only way to encrypt your email correctly has been and always will be PGP

Not true.
There are literally thousands of ways to encrypt data.

From the bizzare like steganography to the ancient like caesar's ring.
