Can there be friendship across economic classes?

Hiatussin

New member
Can you seriously be friends with someone who makes in a day what you make a month of worse or vice-versa?

it would suck IMO

I grew up without shit & now I do well. I'm less comfortable with people in my "economic class". I think people are comfortable with others they can relate to. If you put 2 people together from 2 different worlds it would be dificult, but it depends on the person.

um...yes, why not?

my school circle of friends includes people living on the poverty line as well as guys who had high performance sports vehicles given to them on their 16th birthday, who would fly to greece for a week just to chill out between semesters, and whose weekly allowance (alcohol and pot money) was equivalent to the average weekly income in this country

but i have to say...the rich guy was an asshole

I just dont see how you can hang with someone who bleeds and tries fucking hard for something you wouldn´t even want because you have better

i can see how an asshole can see it that way.

right thinking people, on the other hand, see worth in other human beings that transgresses their bank account or lifestyle.

whatever transgresses whatever, your watch is worth his car. It may even PAY OFF for him to look through your trash.

you missed my point. All my real freinds are from where I grew up. They are basically struggling & look me as one of the ones who was lucky to make it. Those are my people. I can hang with anyone, but I don't care much for hanging around people I work with who have had it easy their whole life.

I'm better than everyone so it's hard for me to hang out with anyone. I primarily hang out with myself and a mirror. I talk to myself and tell myself how pretty I am. I laugh with myself when I'm taking myself out to dinner. I just set up by big vanity mirror on the opposite side of the table and preen. I smile and smile at myself because I'm so beautiful and perfect.

Well, you are very pretty

you mean like hanging out with someone who eats macaroni & cheese cuz he wants to, not because he has to?

I know. I'm so fantastic sometimes I move myself to tears. Sometimes all I can do is look at my glorious reflection and say "Damn girl, does it get much better". Then I laugh and laugh because it doesn't.

I don't really care about the economic state of others because nobody else matters. Just me. I'm going to go give myself a hug and a standing ovation right now.

My girlfriend masturbates in front of the mirror looking at herself

I grew up with a lot of money. To be honest I used to be reallllly snobby. I'm better now but I'm still a little uppidy. It was hard when I went off on my own and couldn't afford to have the life I grew up with.

When it comes down to it though if someone is nifty I don't care if they have more of less money or stuff than I do. None of that matters in the end.

My family is like this. My father used to be succesful then got in an accident and cant work anymore. They spoil me though

Certainly. Its a matter of taking someone's 'worth' as more than their bank roll.

I know folks on both sides of the pendulum that really dont pay attention to all that, i find them a great addtion to my life. On the other hand, those folks i know that obsess about money, be it the trappings or lack there of, are repugnant at best and have very little to add to any conversation.

Case in point: i have a cousin that makes 7 figures, t-shirt and jeans, likes to cook, play with his toys but is a 'real' human. I have a another that doesnt do quite so well but still very comfortable, that if he ever sees me with a gadget, hears of a trip i just got back from, sees a new car in the family, a tie, a watch, ANYTHING, the first question is never 'do you like it?', 'did you have a good time?' but ALWAYS: 'How much was it? how much did it cost?'

Feh. That is indigestable.

A very close friend i have makes a living with little to spare, cares for the family, loves his friends, cant go out to eat much, no expensive anything but revels in the joy of family and sharing a belly laugh with those that matter. Happy? Yes. Great to have around even though he cant ante up? MORE than great.

what did we do to deserve the privilege to post on the same board as you your majesty

Yes

I don't categorize people by their net worth.. You'll overlook some very genuine people by doing so. I like to get to know someone before I put a sticker on them. Rich, poor, middle class, I have friends in every area and I love them all the same.

My dads family, esp my grandmother is pretty well off. She wasn't born with a golden spoon but my gradfather worked damn hard to build what they have. She didn't even know their net worth when he died because they didn't allow money to change them in any way.

Still to this day you would never know what she is worth by looking at her. She's the type that penny pinches even though she doesn't have to.

Our office cleaning people are married but not to each other. But when I leave at 4 they're making out in the car every single day and have been for years.

Nah, not really, too many difficulties, people get caught up in shit. Best to hang with your own level when possible.

It really requires maturity to see past all of this, especially in the states where people are such consumers.

No, I look down on everyone poorer than me and I hate everyone richer than me....unless they buy me expensive things.

Sure....I've had friends in different economic classes. You are pretty ignorant and insecure if you pick your friends because their income is at your level..lol...how sad.

yup

same goes for uglier than me or prettier than me. I also don't hang with anyone that isn't my same body fat %, or that doesn't train hard.

I don't have any friends ;)

We should compare Friend Candidate Questionaires one day.

when i meet a potential friend, i ask to see their credit score, their bank statement, and their last w2. then i make an appointment to visit their house and decide if i like their decorating style or if they have any clothes i can borrow.

it says a lot about you that the thought of looking through your friends trash actually came up

i dont give a shit about money. if i want it, im more than smart enough to amass a lot of it.

life is packed with variety, yet we as people are similar enough, across economic classes, to have enough similar interests to sustain a friendship.

i know rich people i only talk fishing with. i know poor people i only talk fishing with.

i also know some rich girls (rich as in...my daddy owns those buildings over there...big mofo highrises) that i only make out with....but with less passion than that cute bargirl over there

(just thought id say that :) ...you know, just had to :D )

quite frankly i see people who cant see past $$$$ in a friendship as socially deficient...and also, their fubar way of thinking undermines their entire friendship

There is so much bullshit on this thread it is amazing. Most of you probably don't even really know anyone whose situation is different than yours, except as casual acquaintances. Fucking posers.

This is such an amazing board - throughout almost all of American society, people hang out in their own economic / social backgrounds...but the members here move among different groups with the greatest of ease.

LOL!

That's a monthly number, right?

And I'll tell you straight out, I don't have a 9-incher. You probably do, but you're black, so that's kinda small for your people.

I got an extra plasma set, you can have it if you come get it.

I'm not even in the same state as a 9 incher, as a few EF'ers can tell you. I'll be in Atlanta for christmas. Don't think I won't drive 9 hrs for a free tv. I'll loot your house just as easily as Walmart. :)

Better come at night, DT, if you're looting. Only way you'll blend in during the day is with a leaf blower. :)

I still love you though and if you are in town, the TV is yours.

Hell YES!

You eat sushi? They also have a kick ass Sushi place Chef and I ate at.. :p

Downtown stays kicking... we won't be bored

Matt I call BS on you money don't mean shit if you have two people that know how to have a good time. A brunch at Perkins can be just as fun (mind you not as yummy :) ) as a dinner at RC. Oh and my karma message should read 1/16th LOL

YES.

One girl that i'm good friends with, her and her family are in the millions. I'll guess about 20-30.

However, my best friend since kindergarten, his family isn't very well off at all.

The lesson is, when you live in a small town and know everyone, you are friends with everyone.... almost, as long as they played sports and threw good parties. ;-)

I was raised on Perkins, D.

Perkins is platinum plus.

All I'm saying is people get funny. Not everybody, nah...I am generalizing, though.

Yes, as I am flat broke and still friends with everyone I have always been with.

No worries for me, none for them. Its all good!!

Economic status is the end result of someone's inner characteristics.

Someone's whose a doctor is probalby someone who's educated, patient and mature.

Someone's whose a waitress for 12 years, is probably someone who seeks little in life, and spends most of her time fighting with her family and doing meth.

If you're of one class -- clearly you'll find more in common with people of similar ilk. Though if you're very versatile and very outgoing -- you can find things "in-common" with most people, such as me.

Though i sitll "prefer" educated, smart, life-lovin', mature folks. These people are usually found in more numbers on the higher scales of life, rather than the lower scales.

For all practical purposes close friendships for most people between people of extreme economic classes is not likely.

Let's assume there are 4 economic classes:

The Poor (living at poverty or below), the Middle Class, the Rich, and the Uber-Wealthy

The most people will fall under middle and the levels within that class.

I think it's is safe to assume that people in similar economic class will travel in similar circle based solely on lifestyle.

It is unlikely that the Rich or Uber-Wealthy will have any interaction with the Poor - the live in maid is even Middle class.

I think it's safe to say that the possibility of the Middle and the Rich to quite often have their lives cross over in business and in social functions.

It is less likely that the Uber wealthy (Bill Gates, Rockefeller, etc) will have social related functions with the Middle class, the Rich perhaps, through hobbies, fund raisers and business related functions.

So - it's not that you are "picking" your friends through their monetary value it's that people with similar lifestyles (and I mean that from an economic stand point not what it is you like to do) will travel similar circles.

In short the least likely cross over are in over more that one economic class.

As with most of life there are exceptions - like growing up in one class and growing into another or unique life situations or experiences.

It's just how life is - doesn't make you a decent or undecent person, a prejustice one or a snobby bastard (those are character traits reserved for all classes) - it is what it is.

Don't forget the impact and effects of geography on that.

Poor people will mostly likely live close to other poor people -- and work together in jobs that employ poor people.

Likewise for rich, and uber-rich.

If your'e in the hamptons -- you're not gonna go to queen's to get a beer and hang out with the locals there.

You are the company you keep.

Most of my friends are on similar socio economic ground as me.

here is why.. if my friends were all jet setting across the world on vacations, I couldn't afford that, I'd feel like shit cuz I couldn't go and have fun with my homies.. or i'd feel like shit cuz my rich bros paid for everything.

Some of my friends from high school didn't do much and now manage a taco bell or whatever.. they just aren't into the same shit I am.. nearly 30 and they still love college style parties... I do that once or twice a year, not once a week...

My parents have a house in Queens. LOL

But yes - you are the company you keep.

Speaking of the Hamptons - just in the Hamptons - South of the Highway people aren't going to be playing pool and looking to get laid at Wolfie's place on a Friday night.

A very good friend of mine from college is a BILLIONAIRE whereas I won't make that much money put together in my entire lifetime. Economics has never been an issue with us, we are just a couple of meatheads. I also know a couple of other guys in the millionaire status that are very close friends.

You met in college - when you met was he a Billionaire?
College is like lifestyle - so whether he had money in college or made money post college the bond was former through lifestyle.

Well he wasn't in school when I met him, in fact he was just out of the army. We met in the gym so it was the meathead lifestyle I think.LOL

It was 6mo into me knowing him before I found out how much money he had.

It only takes a project or two to become a millionaire. There are 9 Million millionaires in the United States.

Money is a pain when people expect they can borrow from you all the time.

Average geologists starting salary $19,000/year.

Whereas I make a whole lot more than that, I'll probably never be rich working as a geo money isn't that important to me, I just was making an observation. And billionaire is a long way from millionaire.
