Emo is a spin-off of punkrock.....it's short for "emotional" hence emo.

Basically it's the softer side of punkrock....the same angst, the same dissapointment, the same rebellious nature....only a kindler, gentler version.

Emo has it's own niche now.......usually the chicks will have bowlcuts and blackrimmed glasses and dark fuzzy sweaters, they tend to be "bookish". They wear alot of sweaters and sweatsuits.....

its like Div said... branch of punk music, but its not necessarily softer... Bands like Alexisonfire, Atreyu, SIlverstein, The Used are considered Emo even though they have screaming in them and are definitly not soft stuff (all the time)...
