can someone explain how this BIT TORRENT works?

Here's the really short version:
Most peer-2-peer filesharing programs work like this, they have some centralized listing of all the people connected to it, and organizes a means of searching all those users for files and then coordinating the exchanges.
Bittorrent is different. Bittorrent is essentially an ad-hoc network created around the exchange of one file. Essentially, one server runs a "tracker" file, which only identifies the file to be exchanged, and keeps track of which users are connected and what pieces of the file they have. Then it coordinates the exchange of chunks of that file.
Bittorrent is wonderful because it has high availability. Most of the time when you search for shit nobody has it, or 2 people have it and you have to wait forever to get it. However when you connect to a tracker, as long as there are people on it, you're guaranteed to get the file. ALso speeds are good.
So search on google.com for "Another Bittorrent Client," a decent client, configure it, and then go to http://suprnova.org to download trackers. Those trackers will then open in your client and the downloading will begin.
Note that you cannot "leech," or only download with bittorrent the way you can with kazaa.
