Can a Barbell snap?

Hey guys! Was just curious if it is possible for a barbell to snap if its loaded with too many plates for too long. Thinking it would just stay bent in a worst scenario but was just curious. Since I go over 14 plates on some movements. ThanX!

depends on the quality. I have snapped a standard bar and bent a shit olympic bar into a U shape

Awesome! How much weight were you using? And what exactly is the difference between a standard and olympic bar? I workout at Gold's Gym and am pretty sure they use the same type of bars, which bar would I be using standard or olympic? ThanX again

standards are thinner and dont have rotating sleaves.....they are uncommon at gyms...more home gym type stuff.

Snapped the standard with about 400 when mucking around

olympic bar was an old shitty one in a gym.....it was older than me..and the gym. it looked sick and rusty. I think it was about 550-600lbs on it......cant remember but that sounds about right

Damn... Nice! Id definately snap the standard then. And most likely the old olympic your referring to. Hopefully the newer ones are better, or atleast in better condition! ThanX again

It was my first bar. I had noticed it started bending after doing squats one night (it actually started to feel good to work with......kinda like a buffalo bar) i worked with the bar like this for a while (i was living out of home and didnt have enough money to buy a new one) it hurt my wrists benching due to the bend.

so anyway, the guy i shared the house with also worked out. he said it would be imposible to do a 400lb stiff leg deadlift. So i tried to prove him wrong. i ripped the bar off the ground got to about mid shin height.....and it kept on bending but i didnt notice. as i reached bellow the groin it finally snapped. almost splintered. It was hollow in the middle.
there were no full collars on because its not supposed to hold that much weight.....so there was no room for them so we used those spring clip collars from his dumbell set.
the weights slid off as it snapped.
that was probably a good thing because i could have been injured bad. lucky i let go in time as well

the only injury i got was from cleaning up...it had that chrome stuff that peels off, i got a splinter thing from that. so i got away lucky.

next bar i got was an olympic bar after that. I had to sell my weights due to the different sized holes

Nice. Know what you mean about training alone. I like to feed off the energy in the gym often though. Negative or positive. Like to scare people by loading 14 plates on the bar, screaming and slamming weights. Gets me Psyched! hehe But theres been nights Ive gone into the 24 hour gold's gym and had 50,000 square feet to myself and it was a beautiful thing. If I had the space Id build a home gym :D
