calves

I have really small calves. I was told that calves are geticly pre determinded what size they will be, and that they will not grow much, no matter how hard you work them. Is this true?

lol i thought this post was for me at first ;)

yes, genetics play a large role in calves....kind of like forearms. And they certainly are one of the hardest bodyparts to grow for many... But that doesn't mean you should totally give up or disregard them.

As you can tell by my handle my calves suck..but i still bang it out every single leg day and they seem to finally be coming around.

So keep pounding...try a different calve routine maybe (the one thing i didnt do was focus on higher reps at first..big mistake) and eventually they'll grow.

yea I finnaly gave up about 2 years ago. I figured why botherm bu tI did notice some small amount of growth in them when I worked them out. Maybe I was doing it wrong. WHat kind of routine should I try, I heard high reps (15-25)were the way to go for calves

I'd say go heavy with the weight (most people I see training them, aren't going nearly as heavy as I think they could), don't train them the same day as legs, don't overtrain.

I have tried many different things for my calves and the best results came form Nelsons routine. Thanks NM.

Nelson's routine got me sore as fuck...I would recommend it based off how I felt the next day.

It goes something like this -
load up weight that you will be able to rep to 25 (rep 25 should be failure) then rest 15 seconds before starting again.

Do as many as you can each set, w/ 15 seconds rest inbetween.

Continue untill the total rep number equals 75.

If my memory serves me correctly, that's it. Bump for Nelson to confirm it.

Thank God I've been training my calves since I was about 13 yrs old. Mainly because I figured it would make me jump higher for basketball. But I'll be willing to trade my calves for a better chest any day! Any takers???

You can try the BodyByFinaplix calf routine. I take the donkey calf raise machine, with the entire stack, add 10 45's to the bars on the top (for 950 ibs total), and do one set to failure, each rep slow and controlled (no bouncing), getting a deep stretch at the bottom and a hard contraction at the top (you want to feel a cramp on each rep).

Bam 18.5" calves

Ok, honestly calves are very much genetic and I only do one set because they grow faster than my arms otherwise, but the real point is that most guys do not stretch their calfes, try to feel the contraction at the top, or use enough weight to make them grow, then complain about their genetics, which may not be as bad as they think.

I think this subject is funny. I have only worked calves probably 10 times my whole life. Im 25 5'10 weigh 219. I swear atleast once a week people want to see my calves. Even my hardcore lifting freinds swear I have some of the nicest calves. I should put a pic on here. I have small ankles and then a really wide and really flat hard calf wherever I walk people say something its kinda weird.....Ill see if I can post osme pics. Its kinda like that pic above but mine is wider and when I flex it its flat acrosee but buldges in the inside....I get crazy comments..

u could try nelsons routine, Ive heard good things about it from nay people on the board. I train dc so I do 1 set to failure with a 5 second negative on each rep and hold in the stretch position for 15 seconds b/w reps. It kills my calves

I hate you and your kind.

First thing to do is bring some big balls to the gym cus this will hurt!

Do Nelsons routine to 100 reps getting a deep stretch at the bottom and a hard contraction at the top.

After your done, load up the "sled" with about 2-3 plates per side. Stretch one calf at a time, letting all the weight down on the claf muscle, leg straight. Use the other leg to support the excess weight and to regulate the amount of load on the stretching claf muscle.

This heavy duty stretching along with Nelsons routine is hardcore and effective if done correctly and carefully.

One of my friends has enormous calves--19"+...they are ripped and split up to hell..he hits the donkey for the full stack, plus a 45 and 25 on each side, then supersets with standing calf raises, that's all..
me, i split up my days, one day i will do 10-12 set of 15-20 reps on standing calf raises. next workout, 48 hrs later, I do 10-12 sets of 10-12 reps of seated calf raises. seems to be working over the past 10 months, put over 1/2" on em...

High-Jacked, you are correct. Any time you actually train your calves properly they burn like hell. Even my one set workout burns, and they cramp for 15 minutes afterwards. Stretch deep, contract hard and use heavy weight...
