Burning fat by location

My question particularly pertains to abs. A friend of mine who was pretty big into bodybuilding had told me once that it didnt make sense to do too much abs until you shed the weight around your midsection because all you are really doing is building muscle under fat. I am trying to cut down, especially around the mid-section... im 5'9 190... prob around 16%bf but thats just a guess. Anyway heres my question. When you train your abs will building the muscle there help burn more fat there or anywhere? Like if you had a very muscular chest, would your body burn more fat around your chest area? Thanks for your help.. I dont do abs now because of what my friend had told me but I was thinking about putting them into my routine.

Thanks again.

you can't spot reduce. Also the place where you store fat is all genetics, most people on the stomach, but when you lose fat, fat molecules shrink all over the body. You will notice it in you face and legs first then slowly into your stomach area.

Yeah, spot reduction is a fallacy, but work your abs. You might not be able to see them now, but they'll be there when you cut. Also, having more muscle mass anywhere will help you burn more fat (though there isn't a whole lot of muscle mass in the abdominals) and having strong abs also helps in countless ways.
