Check the classifieds in your local paper, or see if there is a store in your area that sells used sports equipment.

How come rubber coated plates are for sissy's until you paint them pretty colors and call them "bumper plates"?

Just thinking out loud.......

Question. All you need is just one pair of 45's right? You can load the bar with 135, and then add regular metal plates 35, 25, 10 and 5 lb plates to teh far to make it heavier. When the bar falls it will first fall on the 45 lb plates and won't damage the regular plates.

well you need to spread the shock!
The bar will take the impact of the metal plates - anything over 25lbs will kill the bar! Reemeber your dropping the bar from well above head height after a jerk etc
Plus the rubber on that 20kg or 25kg plates won't last long like that.

Plus metal plates are so loose they rattle and bounce - causing all kinds of problems when your rack the weight

But at the mimimum - a few 20kg or 25kg plates, plus a 2 pairs 10kg would be about right.

ok how about you do this. Buy 2 pairs of 45 lb bumpers.

Sandwich the 25's and 35's with 45lb bumpers on each side. This way it will proportionally absorb the shock.

So the bar will look like something like this

45==25=25=25=25==45-----45==25=25=25=25==45

well who's going to snatching that much weight all the time? :)

what about when warming up?

don't be a cheapskate - doing it right the first time is always the best way :)

i have done the 1 bumper and the rest metal thing in high school but i was only cleaning around 275 so it wasn't that bad

now it would be kinda impossible because I do sets of 6 at around 335.....every time it his the floor the metal plates rattle around and get all fucked up....it is a pain in the ass.

the best deal I have found so far is 4 45's (hamilton) and 2 of the 35's,25's,and10's plus a bar and collars for 699, but i havent confirmed shipping yet

we had those at school and they didnt tell the poundage on the plate so i put the 25's on the bar and was curling it and some girls that knew a bit about lifitng were like "OMG hes curling 135 like nothin!" haha, i just played along...

some girls are gullable

you are so cool.

Hampton's are decieving - the Reds are normally 25kg plates in official trim - ie 55lbs, whereas the Hamptons are 45s...

I think magnum makes a pretty good set. we were thinking of ordering some when I was running my college gym but due to budget cuts didn't ever get around to it. The vendor told me they were good quality and were backed by a replacement warranty. He also said that Ivanko had some breakage problems and not the best customer service. He was an independent vendor so it wasn't like he was just trying to sell us on magnum.

Cheers,

ouch expensive.

I'd ge the locally though - shipping would kill you!
I suspect the people at the Burwood place would know where to get them from

My friend runs a gym for varsity sports at a large D1 college and they all use Eleiko for bumpers and York for the regular.

That place is a wonderland.
