breathing while benching

Hi, I am new to this forum. I want to first say that you guys have great information. I wanted to know how to go about breathing while doing heavy raw benching. I read in a power lifting magazine that Ed Coan recommends that you try and hold your breath for at least 3 reps so that you can keep the internal pressure and give you more power. Is this something I should be doing? I try to do at least 2 reps with the same breath. How do I go about breathing for reps of 5 or more without losing power?

I'm not one to argue with Ed Coan, but I wouldn't do that. I do hold my breath during heavy lifts, but exhale at near lockout.

If I'm doing more reps with lighter weight I'll exhale sooner and breath in a more regular pattern.

I don't think holding your breath for several reps is a good idea. It's easier to pass out they you might think.

You shouldn't hold your breathe for sets over five reps. Holding your breathe is for maximizing tightness and stability for max lifts.

you put way too much strain on your body when you do that.

on a max lift i hold my breath and exhale near lockout. i get real lightheaded if i hold my breath for more than a few reps at a heavy weight

I did that at a MM seminar and near passed out, lol.

I takea breath after a I unrack it and squeeze my shoulder blades together and exhale near lockout.

Personally I only hold my breath on max attemps... Similar to above, I have been told to hold it just before liftoff, and then exhale at/near lockout...
