Bread

If you are trying to gain LEAN body mass, do you avoid breads at all costs? There HAS to be a good bread out there that is low in fat and carbs and a solid source of protein, no? Something comparable to brown rice as far as good sustainable carbs.....

Avoid the bleached breads. Wheat is a little better, but really you are better off with oatmeal. Try to avoid the bread if at all possible. Also, wheat protein is usually weak chained aminos and is not an acceptable source of protein.

i tend to avoid bread and i can lean out better cos for some reason bread sends me craving carbs ? :(

However lately i have been trying tuna + mayo on dark rye+pumpernickel bread... nice :)

Rice is rice; bread is bread (to a point). The reason that brown rice has a lower GI than white is due to the husk being left on each grain, which adds fibre and slows digestion. Remember that the GI is the rate at which 50 grams of carbohydrate from a particular food source (note: not 50 grams of the food itself) will convert to sugar in the body. The same effect could be achieved by mechanically consuming the same quantity of white rice but over a longer period. You get the same amount of sugars, but over a longer period, so the peak Glycemic load will be lower.

It is the same with bread. Brown or wholemeal bread has been less refined as such has a higher fibre content that slows down the absorption of the carbs so has a lower GI and GL.

As far as protein goes, I would forget it. Yes you get a few grams from bread but as Boulder257 said above, it has such a poor amino acid profile (in effect its BV value) that you might as well discount it altogether.

I would say wholemeal would be ok in moderation if its needed for convenience (sandwiches at work etc. as I do) however there are other options for carbs which would be preferable if you can go with those.

I dont think brands matter too much as long as its wholemeal, and I doubt you have the same brands in the US as I do in the UK mate. Perhaps some others can help with that...

I’m really not fussy mate, off the top of my head Kingsmill or any supermarket brand is going to be ok as long as its wholemeal. Probably all made in the same place anyway, the difference in nutritional terms is minute.

true that
have you ever seeen that burgen linseed bread? it's only got 10g carbs per slice

trouble with bread with me is that once i have a slice i need more lol :(

I found a bread that is made with no flour at all - found it in A&P by the bakery section and trader joe also has it.

I was advised on this board long ago, that the best type of bread to buy, is the kind that feels so heavy that I almost need to DRAG it out of the supermarket.

The heaviest loaf, at my local store, is 'stone ground wheat' - I don't eat it that much, so it's O.K. with me.

my only sources of carbs are oats and whole wheat bread and now after reading this thread I'm gonna cut out the bread and replace with more oats. As long as I'm eating lots of vegetables for fiber, is there any reason not to use oats as my sole source for carbs?
