When doing bench press, should the ascent be vertical or slightly towards the feet (or towards the head) ?

Slightly towards the head or straight up. I usually go straight up but a lot of people got towards the head just depends on which works better for you. Don't go towards the feet as you can lose the weight easily and dump it in you guts.

Cheers,
Scotsman

PLs (MM) who go straight up do so because it means the bar is traveling a slightly shorter path.

PLs (WS) who bench in a J shape (slightly back toward your head) feel they are using their joints/muscles to better leverage.

Edit: Actually, I can't remember if MM or WS benches straight and vice-versa. But one does it one way, the other does it the other way.

you bench with a slight curve towards your heade. This style will incorporate your shoulders on the lift, thus giving you a better chance to lift more weight.
