boxsquatters

I was wondering how much progress you guys have gotten in 3 months. I just started doing them 2 weeks ago and I realized how much my glutes and hams are behind. they have never been that sore before. just curious of results.

Hi. I don't do box squats because of the added pressure it puts on my spine. Since I've had some lower back problems before, I'm always careful about it. BUT, squats in general will give you incredible gains. My squat max in the last 3 months has gone up over 50lbs (I'm female).

I have been boxsquating since March and I got 405 for a single, competition depth, last squat work-out. So that is 295 to 405 in 2 months. I follow a modified West-Side Program.

I truly never made good gains till I started boxsquating, I cant do half squats no for some. I need to go that deep then back up.

How low of a box are you guys using?

Thanks

B True

All of my dynamic training is done on a 1" below parallel bow (14.5"). Usually on the last two sets I'll take one of the mats off so it's 2" below parallel.

Now for max effort day I've gone as low as a 10" box. Which at 6'3" is way down there. Have to move my feet in just to get down that far.

yeah...I am 6'2", and do squat to rock bottom position...but couldn't imagine getting down to 8".

I went from a i rep max squat of 485 to 600 in one summer!!!! This was back when I was 19 and of course I was natural.

:bawling: I lowered my box sqaut to just below the knees and I cannot go 5 reps a 225 w/o having pulling pain in my left knee - and I have to stop -

With a box at just parallel, I can go heavier with no pain - but I liked the feel of the deeper squat - any help in being able to go low??

ok then?

Question for all you powerhouse's:

Im going to start trying box squats thanks to powerlifterjay.......... but i have 2 questions and i want to hear what all ya'll think is better.

1st im a bodybuilder who is using powerlifting to maximize my gains....so how low should i set the box? Below parallel or right at it. im 5'11 so you make the call.

2nd i have a lower back i have to watch out for... (and old deadlifting/squating injury.) should i acutally sit on the box or just touch and go...which would be better

thanks everybody

Glad i could get you to try them. They do work. You wont be sorry. But as far a box height go to just parallel maybe an 1inc or 2 below to start. I use about 2 inch below. Now when you do these dont use your wraps but you can wear groove briefs if you want. But when you decend sit back like your sitting back in a chair, go wide and when you reach the box sit down. But stay tight as hell except your hips those you can relax or at least loosen a bit then in a split second fire back up to lockout. But dont untighten your back. Stay tight. They will not hurt your back or anything but do good things for you if there done right. Start out with about 50 to 60 % 8 sets of 2 or 3. then after a few sessions go a bit heavier but dont mix speed with heavy day. But you do want to get used to them before bangin max's. But i squat now a good bit over 700 actually just hit 740lbs, and i only squat heavy when completeing a trainng cycle, between that i box squat. They have made me stronger in th ehips and i can squat wide as hell too. You'll love em!

If your glutes and hammies are behind then 3 months may not be enuf time to really gain. Some people actually have their sq go backwards far awhile when they make the switch to box squatting. That's ok because you are learning how to use the real sq muscles instead of quads. Also, I read in a post abv that someone isn't doing box squats because of the thier spine -- I will say this, if they are hurting your spine, then you're nto doing them right. You are probably bouncing off the box and sitting straight down. The correct way is to sit way back, and relax your hip flexors, then get up.

I have just started my powerlifting routine.

Would anyone suggest using box squats straight away?

I have been squatting for a few months now (i had to wait for my dissloacted knee to heal)

What about using chains on bench press as well?
west side style?
too early?

NO it's not too early. There have been many lifters who started their training with westside stuff. However, I would hold off on the bands and chains for awile asthey can really run you down quick.

Dawg,

You are exatcly right, I just converted to poerlifting from bodybuilding and have been doing westside, unfortuately I jumped right into the use of chains and did some damage to my bicep tendons believe it or not from heavy floor presses with dumbamounts of chains on an ME day. I'm now in my 3rd week of a layoff.

Basically what I mean by injury is, my arms would feel fine, I go inrto the GYM lets say to bench I'm on a second warm up set of 135 (my max is 380) and after a quick set of 3 with 135 my bicep tendon both of them begin to sting with pain, then throb, eventually within 10 minutes my arms go completely weak and almost numb and I cannot even bring my hand to my face, I tried wrapping my arms, wearing neoprin brace on them 1 week off, 2 weeks off, nothing works, the next day I feel fine, no pain no soreness. Its the freakiest thing and also extremely frustrating. I am pretty sure it is some sort of premature burnout from chain work. I'm going to wait a while before I go back to the chains, aftyer my MRI.

People, I'm no guru but do not rush into the chains and bands, master the training principles and get your poundages up slowly then when you get nice poundages and you need an edge, thats when you toss in the chains and bands. I went in to quick.

But I fucking love powerlifting..............................
Peace,

I just started box squating. I use a 11 7/8 box. it was supposed to be a 12" box but I'm pretty sure that 1/8" wont kill me.

I do know that I was incredibly sore the next two days after some very light sets. So far i think they are great. I'll keep posting my results and let you know

Box squatting is for kids, why don't you powerlifters grow up and take the training wheels off your bike and do some real deep knee bends.

OK, Mr a-hole, please enlighten us with your vast experience and knowledge of powerlifting. Please tell us why we shouldn't box squat. While you're at it, please tell us your best lifts and where they were done.

I dont know about you 1-dawg but most experienced powerlifters who box squat can squat well over 3X's there body weight. Wouldnt you agree? And strongestsurvive i can gladly take the training wheels off and squat 750lbs for ya! What do you squat? And just incase you bull shit us, has anyone seen you do it? I have many here who seen me go way over 700 on a few occasions. Oh ya Smith machine squats dont count, Wanna be bodybuilder!

Jay, he's a fucking little prick whose parents didn't whip his ass when he was a smaller prick. Fuck him, he has no idea what he's talking about. As a matter of fact, I'll bet he could n't get up with 315 w/o the box. Shit if he put 315 on his back and tried to get off the box he'd end up glued to the fucker. Hell, he can coem over to my house and prove it to me if he wants. I'll won't even make him clean the shit stains he leaves on the box. I have 4 guys I train with in the garage and I'll bet the weakest one(and he's real freakin' weak could whip his ass on the box.

strongestsurvive

dude you obviously an idiot, the strongest squatters in this country were the ones who advocate box squating. Why go deep and risk injury when contests only require parralle.

Been reading all of this guys posts. Seems strongest survive has 21 posts so far and basically got an ass whippin all 21 times.

Damn bro, you got no friends here, I feel kinda bad.

In the immortal words of Chris Tucker in the movie Friday "YOu just got knocked the fuck out"/

1-dawg, not sure if you are joking with Jay or not but I have personally seen him box upwards of 685 with nothing but briefs. I am sure he can easily handle 750 with the suit and all.

In answer to the orignial post, yes box will help your max go up substantially. I am pretty new to PLing but I have been heavy squatting as a bodybuilder for many years now. Before doing box with Jay, anabolism, and all the others from Golds in lakeland my squat was in the area of 495 (5 plates) now after training with them and their program which includes box and bands my squat is 585 and this has been less than the 3 month duration you asked about.

Naw 1 dawg was just elling me what he thought of strongest survive. 1 dawg is also a fl powerlifter with a big 750 plus squat to boot. But i will say i have seen juice junkie squats sore throiugh the frerakin roof! Juice junkie will be an 800 plus squatter in the near future i gaurantee it. So all you youg box squatters keep do ing them.

Juice Junkey I was not talking about Jay. I know Jay very well and he has come a long way in the past couple of years. I was most definitely referring to Strongest whatever his name was. I would love to kick his ass for the fun of it.
