Boxing while taking Glutamine and Protein Shakes

New Jack

New member
If I'm into a rigorous boxing regimen where I am training for an amateur fight (running for miles 2x wk, sprints 2x wk, weightlifting 2x wk, plenty of sparring, bag/mit work, jump rope, good diet, plenty of water, etc.) will taking glutamine and a protein shake daily help me or is it a waste?

The reason I ask this is because I am only lifting 2x a week. I am already taking a multi vitamin.

1) Does glutamine help in recovery for doing alot of cardio or just recovery in lifting?

2) Is it a waste of time to take glutamine and protein shakes daily if I'm only lifting 2x a week?

Thanks in advance.

you'd probably get a better response on a different board. try the supplements board or training board

New Jack,

Having competed as an amateur and professional boxer in the '70's and '80's, I can give you some qualified advise.
First, drop the glutamine, and start taking a multi-vitamin - if you don't think you are getting enough vitamins from your daily diet.
The protein drink once a day is okay, as you still need sufficient protein to be able to train, and keep muscle/strength.

As far as the roadwork (running) goes, you need to run 6 days per week (minimum) for 3-5 miles. The week of the fight, you can cut it down to 1 mile and then run wind sprints - 10 - 40 yard dashes - with 30 seconds rest in between.

Your weight training should consist of 1 basic exercise per bodypart for 3-5 sets total - and reps between 8-10.
A good routine is: Bench - Wide Grip Pulldowns - Seated Presses - Barbell Curls - Lying Tricep Extensions - Barbell Wrist Curls - Squats - Calf Raises - Neck Harness.

Abs should be done 6 days per week - with a combination of situps and leg raises.

The boxing routine should consist of shadowboxing (for warmup) 3-5 rounds (3 minutes/with 1 minute rest) Sparring 3-5 rounds, Heavy Bag 3-5 rounds, Speed Bag 3-5 rounds, and rope skipping for 3-5 rounds or 15-20 minutes straight without rest.
