Don't agree with that either. I use box squats as my main excercise and almost never do regular squats anymore. But like I said it is not a bad idea to do some accesory work too to ensure quad growth. If they are growing that's great and I was the same way, but might as well throw something else in the mix.
The purpose of the Box Squat is to increase your regular squat. What Al420 probably ment to say is that Box Squats are Special Exercise (not accessory exercise) that is designed to mimic the PL squat. A Special Exerciser is basically any compound movement that mimics (in powerlifting) the bench, squat, or deadlift
For Benching, that would be floor presses, board presses, reverse band presses...
For the Squat/Deadlift, the special exercises would include...Box Squats, GM's, Rack Pulls....
Accessory lifts are ones that are more of isolation movements that also help to strengthen ones weakness
For Bench....any tri or lat work
For Squat/Deadlift....any lower back, glute or hamstring work.
SDHW...to answer your question to Al420...you are both right an wrong. WSB uses Box squats on every dynamic effort day (ocassionally working up to a heavy triple that is over 90% of 1RM). of max effort days, they alternate their main exercise between some form of squat, deadlift or GM. Generally the lift is switched every two weeks. Very rarely is the Box Squat used as a max effort lift.
Are you using a wide stance when you squat? then most likely the only soreness that you will feel will be in either your hips or your hamstrings.
