boucing the bar off your chest will save your shoulders !!

this is what a friend of mine told me.
he told me he does this because coming to a stop on the chest put all the downward force onto his shoulders.

he says bouncing doesnt transfer the same energy to the shoulders, and thus, is safer.

i told him he was a moron, but i couldnt give any 'proof'
anybody have an idea why this is unsafe (bwesides breaking your ribs) ???

tell him he's wasting his time, bouncing the bar greatly reduces the tension and effort that stress muscle and result in growth !

I'm a big believer in NOT providing unsolicited advice in the gym. Every day, I'd like nothing better than to pounce on people and tell them what they're doing wrong, but I think that's innapropriate. So I just watch an laugh to myself.

The ONE time in my life I have ever interjected myself was about six years ago when some rookie kid loaded up the bar, arched his back and proceeded to try to bounce about 225lbs off his 155lb chest. You guys should have seen it, he was the mother of all bouncers. And I seriously feared for his safety, so I took it upon myself to tell him that.

But he was young and arrogant, as many lifters are in their early 20s, and politely told me to piss off. Eh....kids today :)

it also cheats your pecs, and isn't that the purpose your doing it in the first place?

it lets you use more weight than you probably need to use resulting in bad form which raises the risk of injury:(

DR.SLOE :fro: :mp5: "sum mutha fuckas just be hard head........he prolly don't bench that much noway"

i dunno about that bouncin stuff, but i wanna bounce my face of that girls chest in ur avatar:D that will reduce some tension somewhere in my body

cool. does anyone actually think bouncing is safer on the shoulders, that boy must be quite stupid.

say dawg, bouncin' dont save your shoulders, but benchin' wit your elbows tucked will"

agreed, if he wants to save his shoulders have him bench powerlifting style, elbows close. wide is what screws them over.

1 by bouncing he is basically letting the tension go and just letting gravity take over and when the bar bounces a measly 1 maybe 2 inches off his chest, starts pushing again.

ok....... going from a negative is a lot easier than just staring in the positive motion. think about it, how much could bench if the set started with the bar on your chest, so by letting the muscle relax the balistic force he puts on them will cause more damage then correct benching ever will.

i use to be one of those bouncers. 3 years ago next month i benched the most i ever had. 19 years old, 220 lbs, and i benched 295...... i know impressive huh?...... well besides my sore purple sternum, i had no chest to show for it in my first contest, 3 years later i will be competing at the same show, just about 45-50 lbs heavier......... with a chest about 5 inches bigger, why...... i listened to people with experience, i quit bouncing got my form down and i know boast a bodybuilding style bench of 280lbs, and a powerlifting style of 310lbs...... (the bench when i was 19 was bb style)....... so now i can push 280 with my pecs, instead of using them as a trampoline.

Thats what I am talking about!!:D

weird to say but i find it easier to complete my reps without bouncing (always controlling the weight negatively and positively).
I was kinda losing focus on my reps when I was bouncing.

just a way for people who are using too much weigh to gain momentum and get through sticking point

Yes, and a rationalization for a frail ego, as well.

If he tells you without you asking, ignore it the first time or nod as if you do not care. If he persists or brags, laugh openly if you so choose. You earned it through your tolerance.

i don't even touch my chest when i bench, i go about an inch from it everytime, talk about keepin tension on ur pecs....

To me it would seem that the pec tendon would experience tremendous strain from a violent bouncing motion. There are a number of powerlifters that are pressing 600 or 700lbs that have a nice controlled motion as they concentrate on lowering the bar at a slow speed, then pausing at the chest.

Lets see here:

Bouncing can lead to:

1. strain on pec tendon
2. cracked sternum
3. possible sprain to pectoral/sternal area
4. severe bruising

Maybe I'm backwards, but it seems to me you would use your front delts MORE if you bounced. I mean, people bounce because they can't push the weight with the muscles they're supposed to, so you use speed and reversal strength to rebound the weight. At that portion of the bench plane, in a BB bench, the pec tie-in and front delt are getting hammered. By not pausing, and re-recruiting the proper muscles, you freeze the shoulders and pec tie-in in action for a longer, and far more stressful period. All I know is that bouncing would torque the hell out of MY shoulders.

In a couple years he will be out of the game, and saying "You know...Advil is a great pain reliever" deep cold didn’t do jack! but hey, you know where I can get any codine???
