Board Press Rant

superwife

New member
I'm sorry but i have to rant for a minute...

Every time my husband and I take the boards to the gym, some stupid trainer has to make a joke about him not beating me... really...it might have been funny the first time (MAYBE) but now a month later it just makes me want to strangle the person (did I mention that it is typically the same 2 people...).

Then, this past weekend, we were doing board presses and this guy in his playboy bunny tank wanders over and asks what we are doing. No problem here, we love to explain to people and spread the knowledge. We tell him what we are doing and he proceeds to tell us that we should be doing x, y, and z instead. He didn't ask what our goals were, just said that there were "better" things to do. After we finally got rid of him, my husband leans over and mentions that the guy had already been kicked out of the club earlier because he was trying to work out in sandals...

Really makes me want to buy equipment and stay home...

Thanks for letting me rant...

yep, people give us strange looks when we bust out the boards...

You should hear what they say when I'm dragging the sled around outside and Nate is waiting for his turn...something along the lines of, "Is that her punishment?!" Many people think we are training for the Firefighter physical test...good guess though.

Don't let them get under your skin...get mad and set a PR to "get even!!"

well i can agree with you girls until you see some of the guys in my gym use the boards omg what a joke guys saying they can bench 550 and i watch thenm bounce press with about 5 inches of board only 480 and clain\m they have a 550 bench nto trying to take anything away from this exercise , it works, but there sre some people who give it a bad name so to speak

no one but nonerz and i use boards in our gym. though there are some guys that looklike they are using invisible boards....if you know what i mean.

i think those same guys do "invisible high box squats" too.

Where I was recently training w/ some PL's and learning the joys of the boards, the bands and other implements of pain, I would say at least 3x /week muscle bound BB's would walk up & ask what we were doing, how to use the bands, etc. The gym I was in was not a major franchise but rather an older local gym that has been upgrading its equipment to make it at least as good as your typical Gold's. The people were always interested in learning & my buddies were always interested in taking the time to teach and answer questions while pushing themselves (instead of just "strutting"). I would say that among the people I've lifted around over the last several years, these PL's are probably the most friendly, instructive & just plain old really damn nice people that I've ever come across in a gym.

... now I gotta see if I can find those kind of people in my new town. (crap I hate moving)

my favorite questiong regarding board presses was the day some fool came up and asked it was to "hit your inner pecs?" VDOP just rolled his eyes....and said....yeah man....that's what the boards are for.

I just said the same thing last week. And, they are always having FUN doing their training. They're not just going through the movements, but they're enjoying the sport. They're so much more down to earth than most of the other's in the gym.

Last week I met a couple of new guys who started training at the gym about 2 months ago with the usual PL crew. The older guy (mid 50's) was an absolute sweetheart, we talked inbetween sets and told me anytime he's there he'd like to help me. Friday nights are usually dead in my gym except for the PL guys so I'm hoping to catch up with the old guy and learn a thing or two tonight. :D

Hey, did you notice Friday that when there are more than 2 people doing the same exercise, no one came up and made any off color comments?!?

Also, maybe because even superwife was handling more weight than the "Fluff boys" where we lift.

Good job to you and Backlash both for the effort you put out, and not being afraid of throwing more and more weight on the bar!

The other trainers in the gym used to look at me funny...especially how I was training the athletes. Strange...ALL my athletes are gaining in size, strength, and losing body fat. They are getting better at their own sport too...

I let the other trainers use the bands on different exercises for themselves...they fell in love.

I'm the biggest/strongest in there...and one of the leanest. Maybe what I am doing is working...lol.

VDOP reminded me this weekend of his favorite "stupid question" story.

we were doing band resisted (RESISTED, not assisted!!!) bench, and one of the "fluff" boys came up and asked....."are those bands so that you can just let go when you get tired?" VDOP's reaction...."yeah man....wanna try it?"

You're right, they left us alone at your gym! We need a gym like that here... though that guy did make some dumb comments to backlash when he had the shirt on (and yes, he has some great marks in his armpits...).

Thanks again for all your help and support this weekend, red-evil and VDOP!
