BMW 740iL

Dumper Humper
A quick review of a good auto.

Drove to Charlotte from DC to the Masters Olympia. A friend of ours has a leased 740iL for his business, and half way to NC, let me drive.

I was doing 90 on the interstate, and it didn't even feel like the car was doing 60. Very smooooov. An interior that did everything except serve up cocktails. A voice recognition system that worked fairly well. The leather felt great (I drove shirtless), and the seats adjusted 100 ways to Sunday.

Some negatives. The "gearshift" was a little too complicated to operate off the bat. It took some getting used to, which is not a good thing when you want to go in reverse, and the car then moves forward. The turn signal switch and the cruise control switch felt like they were reversed, so if you wanted to signal a turn, you were setting the cruise. If you wanted to set the cruise, you were signalling to turn left.

No matter what anybody tells you, it is NOT built for 5 people. Especially if most of the passengers are over 210lbs. I was stuck in the back seat for the ride back to DC, and I was getting travel anxiety.

Nice ride though.

this thread is worthless without pics!

I have pics, but due to the TOS of this board, I can't post them.

Believe me, what was going on in that backseat was NOBODYS business.

How's the iDrive which every review seems to bad mouth? There are claims of it taking 5 minutes to program a station.

I didn't have to touch the iDrive. We played CD's on the trip, and the CD changer had seperate controls, as did the A/C. You could also operate the CD changer through the voice recognition system.

You'll have to search the site on your own, but it's a start.

I thought this was an older one - but then you mentioned iDrive... so I assume you meant 745iL.
Now the 760iL - drool - now there is some overkill.

The new iDrive system coming out in the next year's models apparently has added a few buttons to try to resolve the problems with the current iDrive - specifically to make the radio shit more intuitive.

It would be a hard call between the big new aluminum A8 and the BMW 7 series. Less of a hard call if you are going with the 760iL.

Yup, my mistake. I should have said the new 7 series and left it at that. Doesn't the 760 have a V12?

for the same price you could be driving a CL55 AMG and its 493HP or if you wait till next year and add 20 000$, the new CL 65 with its 612HP (http://www.mercedes-benz.com/amg/e/cars/kleinserie_cl65_02.htm)

hey Freeballin was it the new model or the old one? I think they ruined the look of the car when they remodeled it. The ass looks w-e-i-r-d-o. And so did MB with the S class for that matter.

Did it have the 19's on it? We have sitting on 22" HRE's , annd it rides kinda rough.....I have not had the pleasure of driving one in stock form yet.....

my buddy just got one. imo, comparing a 7 series, to lets say a s500 or so, i would definitely take the s5. the ass end is a bit racey, too much for me, and you can get a reasonably equipped m/b for slightly more.

Hi

Thanks for the review Freeballin, pretty much the same thoughts as I had when I first drove it last year.

2Thick what do You mean by
What do you expect. It is a BMW.
? Just curious. Thanks.

Zepo

2Thick, thanks man.

Personally I liked the e38(previous) 7 series better. Before I would not consider a MB S class, now between the new 7 and the MB S class I like the S klasse better. With the new 7 and 5 series I feel like I have to "learn" how to like them, before ( e34, e32,e39, e38 etc.) they were just amazing from the first time I saw them.( talking styling-wise).

take care

I agree with you on that one. I like the front end of the new 7's, but I've got a better looking ass than that thing does. Trust me on that one.

I forgot to add this little tidbit.

We had just gotten to my house to drop my roommate and I off, my roommate was driving the car, and as he was parallel parking, a warning flashed over the iDrive monitor, letting us know that there was a problem with the suspension fluid. Once he finished parking, we got out and checked. Sure enough, a yellowish fluid was leaking on the pavement.

I don't even want to know how much that cost to fix.

uh-HUH!!!!!!!!!!!

as i have tried to hammer home in other auto related threads.........why spend THAT kind of BIG BUCKS for a car that breaks down in front of your house?????

check out the j. d. power customer satisfaction and over all quality ratings for expensive luxury cars................lexus and infiniti knock all the european car's dicks in the dirt!!!!

do ya'll know of ANYONE who disliked thir lexus or infiniti????

as much as i despise small jap trucks, their mid/upper range cars are at the top of my wish list.

good to know.

You'll have to wait until tonight. I am at work, and I'm not going to have a pic of my bare ass on a networked computer. Once I log on at home, it'll be in your box.

Excuses, excuses... yawn...

Listen Mister Perfect Ass, i have absolutely no inhibitions whatsoever (that part of my brain is permanently damaged). I'll find something on you and embarrASS (sometimes I crack myself up) the living heck out of ya.

Do we understand each other?

That C65 amg is sick. The seven series was a good steal in the beginning they were giving the leases away b/c nobody liked it.

I can understand why nobody liked the looks of it. Again, it's back side is FUGLY. The unfortunate thing is BMW is taking that design road with the M4 (?) roadster. So questionable styling cues for both automobiles.

The interior was sweet though. I drove it while shirtless, and did not stick to the leather seats. :D The craftsmanship, the materials and the design inside was awesome.

any relatively new, expensive car that borks up it's internal fluids all over the street is NOT what i'd call a good car.
