Blood Pressure Medicine questions

I have been battling high blood pressure off and on now for about 2 years. There were periods of time where I was feeling good and it didn't seem to be too much of a bother, lifted heavy, took different supps, what have you. Lately though it has been pretty consistently high and I just seem to be feeling pretty crappy. The diastolic number is usually the problem area, that is usually somewhere in the 90's. The systolic is sometimes high in the 140's or 150's, but usually in the 130's. I'm not sure if this is the only issue at play, I am seeing a homeopathic guy in addition to my regular doc and he says the issue stems from my adrenal glands being overworked. He has me taking some supps right now to help with that, ADHS, Mo-Enzyme (both for the adrenals), EFAs, Amino Acids and Magnesium. No other supplements being taken now. Never taken AAS either, just pro-hormones years ago. He seems confident this will bring the BP down, but I am really not sure.

As far as the BP meds, my regular doc put me on Benicar last year. I had some nasty side effects from that, my heart was acting weird and having PVCs, so he got me off it. I wasn't feeling too bad after that for a while. This year after it being high at his office again, he prescribed Lisinopril. While not as bad as the Benicar, that one seemed to kind of mess with my heart too. Only 5 mgs. He had me get off that one too.

As it's looking right now, I think I may still need to eventually take meds, side effects or not, because I can't let the BP go untreated. Trust me, I have tried just about everything under the sun, cardio, diet, natural supps, breathing techniques. I'm still not convinced BP meds are the best possible choice, but nothing else seems to work. Last check I was around 260, mostly mass, some fat. I could probably lose about 15 lbs of fat, but I honestly don't know if that would drop the BP.

So who out there uses BP meds and still trains successfully, getting bigger and stronger? Do you have to limit youir supplement intake in any way? Which med do you think is best for bodybuilders? I guess Ace Inhibitors are generally considered best for what we do, but even that seems to make me feel funny, unless the body eventually adapts to it after a while. The 5 mgs. got my BP down, but I noticed it still spiked a lot during my workout and I felt pretty light headed and a strong heartbeat. Maybe need a higher dose, who knows. I just hope I can get it down and still lead a somewhat normal bodybuilding lifestyle, I've done it for so many years. Kind of depressing. Sorry for the length, thank you for any feedback.

also, you didn't mention any stimulants you might be taking inadvertantly or ottherwise
recreational habits

the Dr reccomend baby aspirin? do you have any gastro issues?Anyone recc garlic to you?

I tend to disagree with the homeopath (homepathic dr or what? this would be your best bet, not one or the other , someone licensed as both)
Bp is a combo of enviromental factors and genetic predisposition as is cholesterol

you mentioned AAS some Im assuming youre male

Sorry for the late response. I am 37, be 38 in about a month. I've weight trained for 20+ years and continue to do so. I sometimes go as little as twice a week, but I know what works for me. I do a fair amonut of cardio but I could probably do more.

There is nothing else I am doing right now that should adversely affect BP. Diet is good. I don't take any stimulants now, but I used to take a lot, N.O. Explode, Endorush, etc. That probably has something to do with it. No baby aspirin reccomendations. Gastro issues? Like what? I do have bad gas form time tio time. I sometimes cook with garlic. I have run the gamit on trying all types of natural supplements for this. You name it, I've tried it. Yes, I'm, male. Never taken steroids, just lots of different supplemernts. Nothing recently though. And yes, this homeopathic guy is a doctor. I am starting to wonder if I am wasting time and money though. He does know his stuff, but the BP isn't down.

I cant believe no one gave you a recomendation to take a daily baby aspirin...this one is kindve a given. One baby aspirin before bedtime.
bp is NOTHING to screw with, stroke, heart attack among other probs I wont bore you with because the big two are terrifying enuff.

I dont know how much cardio youre doing, but turn it up a little...SLOWLY, make cardio a daily event for you...mild to moderate
This will sound strange but, make sure your bladder is empty when you go in to have your bp checked or check it yourself.
If you have stress get into some sort of meditation....seriously....be consistent.

give anything homeopathic 30 days minimum to work
lose weight, 15 lbs of fat is enuff for some people, either way, lose it safely
stims are out for you, as is drinking and any recreational drugs you may or may not do
try to keep your diet fairly high in fiber, make sure your diet is VERY clean otherwise..watch salt, no transfats, not a lot (if any) processed foods

and lastly, has anyone done a liver panel on you and cholesterol?

your BP isnt horrific and dangerous....YET, whats bad about it is your age
you need to make every modification necc to keep it within this side of reason.
BP meds may ultimately end up being the answer, but they can have unpleasant side effects of their own, try to get this in check without them first UNLESS your BP gets worse

I re-read your original post, itd been a few days...

give any lifestyle changes a consistent honest effort, keep a log and give it 6 weeks
cardio for this needs to be slow and steady
your diet need to stay away from bad fats (we all do anyway)

I think the homeopathic approach would be ok for now as long as the homeopath is a licensed MD
BP with your number at your age has the potential to get bad, its borderline high now

I mentioned garlic because its a helluva blood thinner
I dont know if you take any fatty acid supps, but you ought to

I dont know that you can work this into a BB lifestyle truly, but I don't see why not if you go au naturelle'

Thank you for all the tips. I just got it checked yesterday and it was 120/80. I'm glad but kind of confused. I guess it just varies all over the place. Maybe some of what I am doing is already helping, but I don't think one reading puts me in the clear. That is not the kind of reading that requires medicine, but I think it might still run high. I still feel crappy when weight lifting.

The ultimate goal though is to incorporate this into a bodybuilding lifestyle. I guess as long as health is at the forefront, it should work. I posted on another site polling guys about meds they take and it seems like there are plenty that do take them without it affecting training at all. I'd be more than happy if I could find one that works for me to keep it down. Some of them are even able to use stimulants they claim. Inside health comes first though. I used to get scared with the thought of losing mass, thinking I won't be as attractive or something, but I need to get over trhat. I guess having some mass with a narrower waist is more appealing to women anyway than lots of mass but a sort of bloated look..

I think like any other measure of attractiveness it varies.....I prefer less mass, tapered waist v-shaped...but thats me

I know some women prefer men to be huge...it varies
keep your health on the forefront tho......being huge does you no good if youre dead

p.s. google "white coat hypertension" its something to consider as well
