Neither necessarily. 90 degree bent over, aka Pendlay Row. weights should deload to floor every rep.

Do a search on youtube for pendlay row. Keep your back arched, as Al says "you want your shoulders trying to touch your ass".

chose one rowing motion and stick with it. doesnt matter if gp rows, barbell bent over rows at any angle or db rows. personally I wouldnt do upright rows.

Bent over rows...90 degrees, it's in the program as a back exercise, actually it's not in Starr's program, I think it is a modification Madcow made because without some coaching a lot of people butcher the power clean. Most people also butcher the bent over row to the point of making it a glorified jump shrug, thus totally ineffective at training the lats......read through Madcow's website and try to stay at 90 degrees.

It's been a while since I last read up on it but IIRC Madcow (or was it John Smith?) subbed-in the rows for power cleans. I think the deads were subbed-in for hang pulls or high pulls and the OHP was incline bench.

Maybe I'm wrong with the incline bench but I recall reading that the angle is more useful to train for an American football player facing off against an opponent.

If you want to get a thick back you need to be 90 degree's. Bar should hit your lower pecs.. I deload on the floor when the sets get heavy to save my back.. works great for people with back problems.. but the lighter weight i hang..for strength i think the deload helps..you also dont get as sore...
