Best way to go about finding a job in NYC without living there?

-SD-

I will be graduating may 08 masters accounting and want to move to NYC. Obviously I will need a job and want to know the best way to go about getting a job there before signing a lease or anything like that. Should I just get some money together and move there and get a job before the cash runs out or is there another way to successfully get to NYC ?

well if you do that, best bring a lot of cash....i would start sending out resumes a few months before you graduate, and start looking for apts once you have an offer...that can be a bitch....you'll probably need to pay someone if you're looking in Manhattan, and you'll have to act quickly.

for affordability purposes i will be looking at queens (astoria) or brooklyn, both near subways accessing manhattan. probably going to have to do the roomate thing temporarily then sign for an apt somewhere.

i dont give a shit. wanna get to nyc anyway i can and ready to sacrifice for it. spent a week there last summer and decided i gotta live there. greatest american city.

NY is very expensive to live in bro.

save ALOT of cash. i'm talking 4-5 months of bills (in NYC)

the rental requirements are fuckin retarded. they want you making like 10x worth your living expenses..so you may even need a co signer

find a headhunter, or search online for jobs. do your homework.

maybe visit out there to hit up a bunch of interviews.

lots of opportunity in new york but you gotta bust your ass and make connections.

even queens and brooklyn are expensive, especially compared to TX.

roomate thing is the way to go. In manhattan can get a mediocre 2 bedroom for $1500 a person. not *that* bad

and yes, best american city hands down. fuck, i need to get back there

I actually found a forum www.wirednewyork.com and there is a ton of good info about moving to nyc. Based on that info i should be able to get a roomate for 8-900$ a month rent in queens or bklyn relatively easily. I wll be going there for a week either during december or march (spring break) for soley business purposes (jobs, housing, etc.) should be able to secure a dcecent job with a masters in accounting in a short time.

sure if u want to take a complete chance on landing a job you may not like or in an area you hate.

use craigslist or myspace - find a roommate for $500 or whatever. move in. find a job wherever. then move to a new place.

you can also look for a place to live in westchester and take the metro north into the city - not a bad route for your first few years, actually I really can't see you living in queens - brooklyn yes, queens no

good lucky dave - I think you're making a fantastic choice with this and I wish you best in your career endeavors

don't give life altering advice about a city you have no clue about.

what you said makes absolutely no sense and it's not that easy to just pick up and move there.

renting a place is not the same in NYC as it is anywhere else.

and lol @ 500 bucks.

you can crash on my beanbag chair, bro. but you'll have to be shirtless and thong-equipped.

i mean that in a hetero kind of way.

you live in jersey rob, no dice.

true, but i'm in jersey city. if you don't know what that means, never mind. i'm closer than queens or brooklyn.

but seriously, if you need any help, let me know. if you'd like, you can forward me your resume and any additional background on what you know and you'd like to do. when i get back to work, if i hear of anything that might be suitable, and i can appropriately pass it along, perhaps i will.

I know where jc is, looks about the same distance from queens/bkln more or less but from what Ive heard it takes longer to get to manhattan from jc logistically. what are the rents like for efficiency or 1br or 2br with roommate? check your pm, thanks rob.

hoboken is right there...take the path train and you're there in 5 mins.

all my friends from college (when i went to college in NJ), live there now.

loving it apparently

it's not cheap anymore though. lots of people live in hoboken now (including eli manning lololol).

depends on where in queens or bk you are, they're large areas. i'm right on the hudson. i take the PATH into work, as it's right outside my building complex. 10 minutes to world trade, 25 minutes total, assuming i don't have to wait for the train. the holland is also literally right next door, if one is driving.

of course, the PATH isn't as convenient as the subway, especially past 11pm (it only comes every 30 minutes), so the outer burroughs can be more convenient in that sense.

JC has 4 PATH stops. since JC is big and has a lot of housing, there's a big range. i suppose you've checked newyork.craigslist.org and newjersey.craigslist.org?

yea checked craigslist and looks like i will be able to make queens, bklyn, hoboken, jc, bronx, all with roommates to save money. I will start looking for something on the subway route and fast to mannhatan and base all other requirements based on that.
