Best Training Method for Athletic Performance.

Elementality

I want to hear your opinions on what kind of workout template supplements an athlete the most. When I say athlete, I'm talking about someone who uses the gym to increase their performance on the field <i.e, basketball, soccer, football, baseball, track n field, MMA fighting> NOT powerlifting or bodybuilding

I'm thinking isolation, hypertrophy type training doesn't add too much to useable strength or endurance in sports.

Heavy, very low rep, long rests inbetween sets may have their utility in certain sports like football line positions.

What about the madcows 5x5? Seems like it has good all around core development, but, it may be lacking on muscular endurance and emphasizing too much in strength...Maybe supplementing this with endurance training would help it out?

Cross-fit and similar programs obviously are the main template used by athletes these days.

Anyone got anything interesting to point out?

training should be explosive and target specific areas for performance. everything is balanced and cycled to bring performance to a peak for an event or season. depending on a ton of factors, in season training could vary greatly. real athletes would have a running program attached in the off season too.

peak level endurance needs training which should be done in the off season and maintained through either an event or season. strongman is the ultimate show of real top level strength and inhuman endurance.

I know it is said a lot but Olympic lifts are great for general fitness and is especially well suited for MMA do to the hip and core strength involved. Some argue that the lifts do not have direct carry over but how can a 200lb+ snatch not make you a better fighter!

This sight (especially the forum) has a lot of general fitness info Ross Boxing

Make sure you train your core, and flexability is also a key element in athletic performance. That with a good 5x5 should be ideal. IMO

The most important thing I can tell you is that you must understand that the weight room is supplementary. Strength is not the be all, end all it is often made out to be. Muscular hypertrophy should not be the focus of development. Remember that the nervous system controls muscles, not vice versa. And even if you're sure that maximum strength is absolutely the quality you need to develop, you had damn well better make sure you develop it in the appropriate muscle groups. Squats are preached everywhere as the holy grail, but for all the good they can do, there is a lot of bad that most people don't realize.
