You basically said it, calories in vs calories out, the best cutting routine is in the kitchen.
Lots of guys (basing what they do on misinformation, in my opinion) think weenie weights and high reps and lots of fluff is the way to train when cutting. Personally, I never felt lifting like a pansy was muscle-sparing. I would say cut back volume (REAL volume, which is workload, meaning weight x reps x sets, not the gay bodybuilding meaning of cramming 10lbs of shit in a 5lb bag) and keep intensity high (real intensity, which is % of 1 rep max, not the gay bodybuilding meaning of the word which is some sort of abstract idea of how hard you're working)
I don't see the need to spend hours upon hours on a treadmill or elliptical and burn away muscle (a big problem if part of your cutting isn't copious amounts of drugs) or even wreck yourself with HIIT.......a 30 steep incline walk, or light olympic lift complexes or dumbell snatches would burn plenty of extra calories if you're familiar with the lifts.
Basically, training and protein consuption and not being a dumbass with cardio will help you spare muscle, while the actually loss of pounds comes from what you're stuffing your face with.
