I hate that there are people on that list like Will Smith, 2Pac, Vanilla Ice, "Me" that take away from the real bests getting the votes. Ya heardj?

I gree with the other two but 2 pac was onr of the greatest too when it comes to gangsta rap......yeah both Will and Vanilla shouldn't even be on that list......what were you thinking?

this goes for any genre. anything mainstream will only go so far, or do so little. IMO, just turning on the radio and complying with whatever is playing and saying that artist is the best or makes the most money is such a hypocrisy. they sell out to the masses. sure they started out small, and everyone wants to make it big, but the ones that keep it true in any genre, usually lay low or do not get the credit they deserve because they don't conform to the record label's way. D.I.Y mang. :fro:

That's right. And these people who decide to join the bandwagons'll only last until the fad dies out.

I don' think so. The only reason they known right now is cause they got hot beats, catchy hooks, and they sold out.

Topic: "BEST RAPPER EVER?" - There are sub-genres of rap just like their are sub-genres of rock. From queer shit like Will Smith to hardcore groups like NWA to political rap like KRS-One & Public Enemy to Southern Bounce, etc. This itself makes it harder to make a choice. Now by best rapper, I think this means for lyrical content and prowess in writing rhymes and mic skills. This immediately disqualifies most of the list. Forget how 'gangsta' someone is, how cool their video is, who their dating, if their mom is a whore, etc. and focus on this. If you do, and you have to choose from the names on that list, its easily Rakim or Eminem.

Topic: B.I.G. & 2 PAC - Not even close to being the best rappers ever. Lets break it down, because I'm sure theres lots of opposition to this opinion. Biggie & 2Pac were average to above average rappers who became "badass" after they died. The controversy surrounding both of their deaths caused many people to become emotionally attached and therefore overlook their averageness. Their fan bases actually grew after their deaths. However, while each did contribute some gems ("Hypnotize", "Big Poppa", "Mo Money Mo Problems", "Dear Mama", "Changes", "2 of Americas Most Wanted") to the rap game, most of their songs were not great. At the rate 2Pac wrote & recorded songs, some were bound to become hits based on probability alone. He wrote so quickly & generically and often contradicted himself from song to song. When he died, he had recorded enough songs to make another 6-10 albums. He'd write and make 5 songs in a day. Thats not skill, thats rushing because you want to get paid. As for BIG, he often mumbled lyrics (as earlier mentioned in this thread) and had other flaws.

I agree on some, but not all of what's said here. Biggie, and Tupac's fan base did grow after they died, but consider this. Before Biggie died, his album "Ready to Die" had sold over 3 million copies. Before 2pac died, he already had 5 platinum albums(3 of which BEFORE HE DIED went quatruple platinum, so before he died, he had already sold over 15 million albums. And not saying album sales mean everything. It just shows Biggie, and Pac had a strong fan base before they died ), and was considered to be in the same class as classic rappers like Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, and KRS-One. Pac even got some recognition from one of the greats, KRS-One saying "While ya'll were respecting Tupac, Tupac was respecting me". An also, Pac didn't rush his work, he had a passion for it. He was known for spending sometimes up to 18 hours in the studio a day. That may explain why he came up with so much material. Yeah he didn't have the best wordplay, but in my opinion, he had mind blowing lyrics. His style is so real, and he always had nice flow, tone, and raw emotion in his music. His style ain't meant for wordplay. Pac is the best rapper of all time.

The Big Tymers are indeed talented. In their own way, yes. Even they admit that their lyrics arent the best, "we dont rap, we game spit, boy understand that". But you cant deny the fact that Mannie Fresh is one of the best rap producers of all-time. Right there with Dr. Dre and RZA. It seems this day, if you do lay down beats that are appreciated by all (from thugs to girls) and a somewhat catchy hook (wheres Nate Dogg?), the rest of the rap song just has to rhyme to be a commercial success. However, when you listen to the Big Tymers, they really do say some funny, outlandish shit. I've heard shit from them that has made me laugh out loud. "Henne & X" - B.G. feat. Big Tymers is HILARIOUS. Throw in tracks like: "#1 Stunna", "Get Your Roll On", "We Hustle", "Thats Sharp", "No, No", "10 Wayz", etc. and youll see how talented they are as performers in general...

As for the "selling out", I'm not 100% sure what you mean, but regardless, who wouldnt? I myself rap and I guarantee that I'll do anything and everything short of having an action figure (and maybe even that) to get money with my fame (when I'm famous). If your idea of success is being an underground legend, moving 1000-15000 albums a year, performing until your 40 then having to get a real job, then you can go fuck yourself. I say milk it for everything its worth while you are on top and get whatever the hell you can. I love music, especially rap, but I want the mansion, I want 50 cars, I want bitches every time I turn around, the endless bottles of Cristal, the pounds of chron, butlers, etc. You dont get that by not selling out. "Selling out" is a phrase used so often anyway that its lost its meaning. Just because you like material goods and money shouldnt detract from the way others judge your performance. Elvis Presley is an example of excess. He used to give new Cadillacs to complete strangers and do all types of crazy shit. Do people call him a sell out? Most wouldnt. But if you're going by the definition you used to describe the Big Tymers, then he was definitely one.

What I mean by selling out is the MAJORITY of what they talk about in thier rymes is Money, cars, and material things with no real meaning and depth to it. They say what they say in their music because it sells. I got no problem with a person getting paid 8 figures, and buying the finest of everything in life from cars, to the flyest clothes, and giving away new Cadillacs. I myself would mind being that rich. But that's all they ever talk about in they music, then they sold out. A lot of what I hear in Hip-Hop now is "Bling Bling, my car, my watch, my bank roll stretch farther than the pacific ocean, the bitches, the hoes, the Cris". Talk about something else!

I agree with you about Manny. He drop some hot beats, but the lyrics is all about the same shit. I guarentee U Outkast is living as well as, or better than the Big Tymers. And at they same time, they got that lifestyle by being innovative, and taking risks. "Bombs Over Baghdag'' was the weirdest, most different, craziest fuckin song hip-hop ever heard, yet they album went 3x platinum. I'm just saying some people in hip hop need to expand the horizons with they music, and write it from the heart, an for the art,an not just cause it make your bank roll start. A lot of rappers are abusing the game.

i gotta go with Outkast circa Aquemini.....

when Big Boi unleashed the retro cut West Savannah...man that was smooth

"February 1st 1975 it happened

was born in west savannah before i started rappin,
my momma had a nigga at the age of fifteen
my daddy was selling that sack now he's got responsibilty......"

I really DO NOT like Eminem AT ALL. I think it some bulllllllllllllllshit, I don't like his music flat out. BUT he can rap and when it comes to lyrics he is talented, one of the top out there. I just don't like it, it is not my style. Not my style at all, but he has major talen, majpr talent.

Now on to 2pac. One of the best. 2pac is one of those cats that became what they always wanted to be, instead of what they were to begin with. He was workin fast and puttin the albums out fast because he had to put out I think either 3 or 5 records with death row before he would be finished. Suge Knight got him out of jail on that condition, and that is why he was workin so fast so he could be finished with death row and move on. 2pac never wanted to work with Death Row. Interscope tried to pawn 2pac off on death row so they could get more slack from the public and let death row take it, but 2pac didn't want any of it. He only went to death row when he was in prison and suge knifght was his only way out.

Puff Daddy - sheeeeit. I think suge knight said it best when he said "How are you going to get punked by a man in a wheel chair

DMX- another faker, with that curr ass dog tatted on his back. Man I saw this cat on some mtv making the video special show where he was makin a video and he was running around actin like a bitch downing his heinekins. He had some woman following him around to comfort his ass. He was pretty much an alcoholic going through pussy little modd swings and bitching about silly girl shit. I thought he was going to break down and cry over the "stress". Don't even get me started on the whole "dog fighter" image. I mean what the fuck, this fool came out on the god damn "oh drama" BET gossip program for ho's and was trying to spit out hints and clues saying shit like bloodlines and grand champions. What the hell.... this fool is trying to hint to bunch of fuckin WOMEN that he bangs dogs. He might have some good dogs, but he even close to bein a real dogman, he just some cat with money who can buy good dogs and likes to talk about it.

now I like alot of shit comin out of houston texas. The screw music, started by the late DJ screw who started the style in houston with his mix tapes. Screwed and chopped, slowed and throwed. Its going to be the next big thing in the rap industry. Folks are already breakin through from Big Moe to Lil Flip, South Park Mexican etc etc the movement has started and its goin to spread. It is popular throughout oklahoma, texas, louisiana, startin to pick up in alabama, arkansas and kansas. Once it spreads it gets into the local underground the next thing you know everybody is listening to it. It is one of the biggest underground rap movements and its spreadin like wildfire.

I don't know about the best, but one of the top freestylists has to be Lil flip. This cat can go and go. I'm also a big fan of Pall Wall & the Chamillion. Big Pokey, Archie Lee, scarface. Lots of good shit I could go on and on. I am sure most of you don't even know who they are, but check out the rap comin out of houston. I like SPM's rap alot but what can I say..... he is now doin over 50 years for molestin the kiddies now, and I got no sympathy for him, cause he was obviously one sick n twisted dimented mother fucker. All that money, and he still wanted to fuck children and underage groupies like R Kelly. Fuck him.

Also the beats are almost more important than the lyrics and the artists. I mean come on.... some of the biggest hits are completely bullshit when it comes to the lyrics and the artists. What it ammounts to is the voice just bein an extra sound to the music where folks don't even give a fuck whats bein said they just groovin and movin. Thats what makes Dr Dre one of the best, cause he is the best if not one of the best producers in the rap game.

Other favorites of mine are dj quick, nate dogg, too short, playa hamm, eazy e, warren g, ice cube, snoop,, shit there is too many to even list. Probably my all time favorite cd is UGK Ridin Dirty. Got to be one of the best ever put out, I can listen to every track on the cd without skippin over anything.

Hilarious, I wrote better rhymes than Big Daddy when I was in first grade.
