Best laptop value going these days

Interested in value. Doesn't need to be the "latest/greatest" for gaming or anything, but just needs to be at a good price/performance point.

Customer service has to be good too.

This is for my Mom. If the customer service sucks, or if this bastage breaks alot, or if it slows down a lot for whatever reason, she will nag me to fix it. I hate pissing with laptops.

oh, and no Dells. Mom works with Dells at work, and she thinks they suck, so no way am I going to try to convince her otherwise. :P

All opinions and links greatly appreciated.

good quality as well!

if u can afford it, these are the ones to get.

They may not look like much of a deal when you look as specs on paper vs. price, but that doesn't show the other benefits of a Thinkpad - (1) you get IBM service; (2) their windows installations and hardware drivers are always rock solid; (3) the machines are pretty rugged; and (4) the Trackpoint pointing device is superior to the touchpads on other brands.

My Thinkpad A22m wasn't an especially good deal, until you consider that four-and-a-half years later it's still a solid machine with more life left in it, and even though it's only a PIII/1000, it runs XP Pro like a champ.

agreed, I worked exclusively with Thinkpads for 4 years... saw all types of abuse being thrown at those things. Outstanding reliability.

A Dell laptop will shit itself just by looking at what a Thinkpad can take

I like thinkpads but they aren't going to be made by IBM soon/aren't made by IBM already, so that may change.

Thinkpad brand Sold to Chinese Company Lenavo...
No opinions yet that I have seen whether this has effected the thinkpads solid specs, reliability or support.

But true, the thinkpad HAS always been one of the most solid consumer laptop.

Low cost and OK reliability/support and best bang for buck = Dell

Average to better than cost and reliability/support Check out Toshiba and HP Pavillion
