Just massive irony. Some athletes are just unwilling to bust their ass in the gym and even try to avoid it. Olympic Lifting is barely hanging on by a thread in a country with a huge population of weight trainers who just plain like to lift and be in there but have nothing better to do with their efforts than try to make themselves look pretty. The olympic lifts are damn fun and can build some massive legs/back/shoulders. For most people obtaining the highest degree of success with the smallest amount of resources is the optimal point (highest utility). Now you get someone who just plain loves to lift and they want more if for no other reason than their own enjoyment. Untapped potential.
Imagine every gym with a weightlifting team. Your basic big BBer who isn't going to compete walks in to train, sees big weights being put overhead and crashing down. Watches guys explode the bar up, shoot under a heavy snatch, and squat that puppy back up. Some primal challenge rises inside him and he wants to give it a go too (this happens to everybody). All it needs is some exposure and more people. Such a damn fun activity and great spectator sport. Translates great to television too. If there is ever a contest nearby regardless of the level, I highly encourage people to go and check it out. At the absolute worst, it makes for a cool day and who knows you might find yourself joining them.
