Here lately, Ive been kinda stressed with work and the holidays. I started smoking again. Not heavily, but maybe 3 or 4 cigs a day. Anyway, Ive noticed within the past 2 weeks, I'm alot more vascular all over and my waste is slightly trimmer. All the health hazards aside, does smoking do anything positive for you? Could my loss of bf be because I started smoking again? Anyone kinda see what I'm saying?

I smoke bud, but I usally smoke it for the abilty to eat way more at night then I would otherwise be able to.

not really, ive noticed I actually eat slightly more. What exactly does smoking do to your metabolism? Anything?

Nicotine works by binding to a receptor on the surface of endothelial cells that recognizes acetylcholine – a chemical that nerve cells use to communicate with each other. Endothelial cells line the interior of blood vessels throughout the body. These nicotinic acetylcholine receptors were only recently discovered outside the central nervous system and their function is not well understood. The ability of nicotine to modulate the activity of these receptors in the central nervous system renders it a potential therapy for neurologic disorders. Researchers speculate that when nicotine binds to the receptor on endothelial cells it stimulates the cells to release a cascade of chemicals that promote the formation of new blood vessels. The new vessels then deliver oxygen and nutrients to the interior of tumors and plaque deposits. The Stanford researchers were surprised to find how strongly nicotine stimulates new blood vessel growth, a process known as angiogenesis.

Another words, the increase in blood vessels gives the illusion of increased vascualrity, when in reality nicotine slows metabolism and circulation.

Nimrod!!! Nice to see you man. Heard you were gone for awhile!! Hey thanks for turning me on to Mr T!!!!!! He's great!!!!

Yea, I am having some personal problems due to my own stupidity. Im glad I was missed, and Mr. T is the man.

The 2001 PDR states that nicotine is a stimulant. Taber's cyclopedic medical dictionary lists nicotine as one as the most toxic substances known to man 60mgs will kill as fast as cyanide. Smoking will kill approx 500,000 americans this year. If no one smoked every other hospital bed in the nation would be vacant states the CDC in Alanta GA. Nicotine is being studied for use in various mental disorders as well as some conditions concerning the bowel. Smokeing makes the platlets very sticky, this is not good for the heart and circulatory system. Cig smoke contains carbon monoxide which binds to the hemoglobin with an affinty 200 times greater than oxygen. I won't get into cancer except to say that cig smoke contains over 200 known carcinogens.:redhot:

Yeah there was some mention of it over at Triedia. But no biggie. They just said if you know you know, if you dont, to bad. Ah well, learning experience right? Ive certainly had my share of those.

So really, smoking would inhibit the loss of weight? When people quit smoking, they usually gain lots of weight, I always thought this was because their metabolism slowed back down? Instead is it just becuase they eat more? So smoking slows down your metabolism? Crap, I cant have that. Time to quit again.

I work in the Cardiopulmonary field and deal with people everyday that have basically destroyed their lives because of smoking. Its good that you have enough intelligence to ask about this stuff, Im glad to see this post on here.
The most common Condition caused from smoking is called COPD, which stands for cronic obstructive pulmonary disease. COPD involves one or more of the following: Emphysema, asthma, chronic bronchitis, bronchiectasis and cystic fibrosis. The most common associate with smoking is Emphysema and bronchitis. Emphysema unlike most respiratory conditions is irreversible and treatment is usually very limited. It is caused by a breakdown of the walls of the inner part of the lung called alveoli, which are basically tiny little air sacs where oxygen is taken into the body and carbon dioxide is relased. When you smoke, it is like putting your mouth up to an exaust pipe of a car, your body takes in carbon monoxide and what most people dont realize is your body only has so much room for oxygen to be stored. The bad thing about smoking is that your body likes carbon monoxide 200 times more than it does oxygen, so what do you think is going to happen? Its going to take the carbon monoxide over the oxygen. generally people end up having a hard time even walking to the bathroom or to the mailbox without breathing like you been running in a 5 k race. can you imagine trying to have sex with you girl with oxygen tubing hanging out of your nose because your lungs are so fucked up you need supplemental oxygen. Smoking also paralyzes little hair in your lungs called cilia that kind of sweep dirt dust and whatever bad shit you breath out of your lungs. If they are paralyzed they cant do this and you become more prone to infection such as pneumonia. Bottom line......Smoking fucks you and the people around you up bad, and you will have trouble the longer you smoke. Zyban works for most of the patients that I give it to alot better than gum or patches. In answer to your original question, No, there are no positive effects to smoking. E-mail me and I will be glad to help you as much as I can.

Good luck

Nicotine is a stimulant i.e. it speeds the matabolism notice the increase in heart rate caused by the stimulant effects of nicotine after smoking a cig. This is the only point that I disagree with in Nimrods fine post.:)

EW: I think that smoking obviously "speeds" you up, but I don't know if the other health risks make it worth it...

See my reply to your other, newer thread, too...
