RADAR

It's intimidating swimming around a bunch of big barracuda. That is for sure. Better not wear anything shiny... ;)

LOL I was going to throw this post in the recycle bin for lack of interest - they did most of the show interviewing a guy who runs a dive shop out of Key Largo - Capt Slade (Slate?) -- the guy takes people out for cuda feeds where he hand feeds ballyhoo to cudas. I worked for two charter boats that did various types of shark feeds for tourists - one tied off a big ball of frozen chum and then you sat in the sand & watched the feeding frenzy. The other hand fed nurse sharks in about 18 ft of water. Eventually all shark feeding was banned in FL when that run of shark attacks occurred over the last few years, but of the two I'm not a big fan of hand feeding predators. Even though they tell the divers to keep their hands wrapped around them / close to their bodies so as to not be mistaken for food, it still establishes the association between human - hand - food - eat, even when the feeder isnt' there. I've also seen a number of the feeders get bit by moray eels in the area. That's a nasty ass bite too. Can do extensive nerve damage.

So anyway I was getting rather indignant watching the Captain do his cuda feeds. Not a good habit to establish in baracudas w/ lots of divers in the Fl Keys. Other than that, it was pretty cool - they took the cameras down on the big wreck USS Duane off of Key Largo. I've dove that many times. Very cool.

everybody pretty much knows I deal with dead people

For the record, my night was so boring I ended up watching cable channels where guys feed fish... 1 fish at a time.

LOL.....

GEEZ, feeding barracuda is BAD! Now they will all come wanting food when they see divers. That is scary!

its not scarry when you are a diver and see them underwater in their environment.

that goes with sharks too, although i have not seen a shark over 6 feet while diving

Cudas are pretty cool - they are creepy as shit but pretty cool. I've seen some big fat 6 footers just sitting in the grass in the sand or several up to 4-5 ft hanging out in the current on the upper parts of artificial reefs (wrecks). Sometimes if you are doing your safety stops around 20-30 ft you're just sitting there hanging for a while and a couple will sorta drift towards you and kinda check you out. One time I was doing the safety stop and happened to be deep enough to be near a whole school of them. The weird thing was there was one that had a broken fish stringer thru its neck, a couple others had hooks w/ leaders hanging out of their mouths, kinda all chewed up & stuff. It was a bunch of pierced up punk cudas. Another time I was workign as the dive master on a dive on a deep wreck off of Ft. Lauderdale and since I had been on the wreck a thousand times and had to both tie off the descent line as well as untie it after all the divers had come up, I went up to the rigging at the high point on the wreck where all the cudas like to hang out & just sort swim into the current -- so I let myself drift in among them and held onto one of the cross pieces and just sorta hung out w/ them in the current. A few times a couple of them woudl swing around and look at me like "Wtf are you trying to be cool like us or what??"

Yea I'm weird.

Another time I was doing the dive master thing on a drift dive and was on my own - not much going on on the reef but there was a ripping current. I happened to find a 6 ft nurse shark cruising along the reef so I started following him. Later the boat captain told me I'd drifted well over a mile in the time I was down due to the current - the shark turned around a few times like "WTF DO YOU WANT???" I always carry a heavy flashlight and had my long fins so when he got close enough I sorta kicked at him w/ the fin.... I don't think he was real happy about me being in "his space". But it was cool. Its fascinating observing these guys. But there's always that off chance you are mistaken for somethign that they tend to munch on and you come out w/ a love bite.

I have been diving with barracuda. It doesn't bug me much until there are lots of them around. Then, I get a very aware of their presence. There are some artificial reefs around here that are like big metal pods with holes in them. Sometimes there are schools of them down there.

I have never followed a barracuda or a shark. I like to chase around the big Jew fish, though. They are very slow and they just sort of turn around and look at me funny.

I saw a few trumpet fish when I was in the bahamas. You can put your face an inch from their face and they will still just hover there. It's really cute.

I was doing a beach dive at Lauderdale By The Sea, had picked up a bunch of these totally cool sand dollars (dead ones -- just the white part left) and this damn damsel fish attacked my mask and started bonking me right on the glass. Scared the living shit out of me & I crushed all my sand dollars. Kind of embarrassing considering damsel fish are about 2 inches long.
