Ban Ephedrine, Then Declare FAT EMERGENCY. Drug Companies Clean up.

The whole impetus of this banning of ephedra is the amount of money these drug companies have paid to the FDA and watching people successfully lose weight with an OTC supplement. Making their product obsolete.

I completely agree with that assessment. Who needs JC and the other weight loss programs when you have a nice sweet ECA stack?

Let's see,

poor diet and inactivity = 400,000 deaths annually - 2nd leading cause
smoking = 435,000 deaths annually - leading cause

Ok, so where is the public outrage for these things? Why isn't nicotine on Schedule III? Why aren't our congressmen and special interest groups going after THESE issues? It seems they should have been TOP priority at the State of the Union speech instead of steroids in sports... just things that make ya go hmmmmm

Do you really have to ask?

Geoboy...how can i find this on jama? Is there a peer-reviewed article on it? I only ask because I'm putting together a presentation/report on obesity in a few weeks, and this seems like something I could talk about for a while.

No I don't have to ask. I believe I already know the answer. However, this allows me to vent a bit of my splean and has a cleansing effect.

Well, at least until I see something similar. Like say the never ending "War on drugs".

hmmm well i disagree that the ban had anything to do with big pharma. the new drugs taht they have in testing are so damn good (that i have seen so far) that they probably would have steamrolled over ephedrine anyway. combine that with a doctor prescribing them, and the fitness crown clamoring over them, and they were in the clear anyway

i think the ban was more political (steroid scandal style) and had implications in the manufacture of herbal ecstasy than out of lobbying by big pharma. big pharma owns a lot of the herbal companies anyway, and let me tell you, there is a BIG markup on herbal stuff. you have to do half the work (less Q control, bath numbering, conforming ot legislation etc) and you still mark it up to hell and make big bucks.

im not saying that some elements of big pharma didnt give it a push, just that overall, its a bit conspiracy-theory, if you know what i mean

cheers for the read

My point exactly. More importantly, large number ofd very expensive drugs in the pipeline set for release soon.

Its just sickening. Sen McCain is about the only guy who's got it right. If you don't take the special interest money out of politics, you end up with this kind of garbage.
