bad knees

Im 20 years old and have bad knees (weight is 228, 5'11)

when i walk up stairs i get a crack sound from them

and get a pain in them when i walk alot or run and are very weak

how can i work on making them stronger
 
You need to strenghten the vastus medialus of the quad...thats the tear shaped muscle at the lower inner thigh.

Do leg extensions but ONLY THE TOP 25 degrees of the movement of you will further bother the knee.

Do some slow deep leg presses.

See an orthopedic surgeon and get an MRI of the knee NOW!
 
I agree with real gains, you must strengthen your quads. There may be a chance that you have some torn meniscus( the cushion or shock absorber in between your femur and tibia ) in your knee that has never quite healed. It certainly wouldnt hurt to have a orthopedic specialist or an athletic trainer check it out
