Backs and squats

I have a really good workout routine right but i am little scared to squat so it seems to be lacking badly. I want to squat but i have had 3 back surgeries on disc in my lower back. Its fine now but it is worth the risk to try and squat or if i do them correctly should i be ok.

start off very slow and keep very good form and test the waters, or talk to a knowledgeable doc to set your mind at ease.

Start with the just bar and make absolutely sure that your form is spot on. Lift belt-free so that you aren't relying on any crutches that could cause you to become careless and take the view that if you think you need a belt then you're about to go too heavy. When you start to go heavier, always begin your squats with just the bar and use your first few sets to limber and warmup and feel for any kinks.

Basically, take maximal care and get strong. That strength should help you maintain a functioning back.

Talk to a Dr. who specializes in Sports Medicine etc.

If I did anything at all, I would use hardly any weight for a while. I wouldn't be set on numbers for this exercise. Just concentrate on the movement and feel, not weight.

maybe try smith machine squats... place your feet out forward a bit, a foot or a foot and a half depending on how long your legs are, so that when you squat down you look like your sitting on a chair. you will have to lean back against the bar a little, but it is much easier on the back for me. i had/have a bad tendency in my form to "fold up" a bit and place my back in a bad spot and this method works better for me. also like the others said, start lighter would be a good idea. :artist:

Smith Machine is not a good replacement for real squats. Take half the work out of it. Use free weights and start off light to see how it affects your back. If you have a doc you can talk to beforehand, do so. If he says no to free weight squats, you might have to fall back on smith machine or hack squats.

You may want to consider using the front squat instead of the back squat also. From what I've heard it takes the load off your back slightly. I would agree with spending some time with the bar to work on form. Ask the doc, but more important, get your vids up on this forum. Plenty of people will help you with your form if you do that. Unforunately, the only advice I've heard a doc give for a bad back, is stop using free weights :-/.
