when i play basketball, my lower back hurts
what kind of exercises can help relieve this pain and make my lower back stronger?
 
Some good lower back exercises are:

1. good mornings
2. hyper extensions

....hmmm...there must be more....

Try reverse hypers.I've had problems with my lower back in the past and within the past 6 months, I've implemented reverse hypers into my routine as part of my general warm up and as a core exercise and these have strengthened my lower back very quickly.
 
I think also stretching the hamstrings helps. I have a lot of lower back pain, and doing toe touches and things like that help me.
