at wits end...need sage weight lose advice

At 40, my 6ft 210 inshape body quit. I suffered some depression, and fatigue. 4 years later, I have no metabolism. I have dieted but never seem to lose weight. My last attempt was a clean run at Adtkins, 90 days, with moderate excersize. I lost 4 of my 235p pounds...shit! I stopped, and am at 250 now.
I have gone to my doc, who shows little concern. He ran test (including thyroid), and says all ok, even though I have 8 of 10 symptoms of a slow thyroid. I am ready for something drastic...any suggestions??
Thanks...

What was your protein/carb/fat/calorie breakdown when you were on Atkins? Did you follow all the advice in the book? If so, after induction if you hadn't lost much weight, there was a certain step you were supposed to take to jump start the program. Did you do that step as outlined in the book? If so, what was it?

re: my diet

since I did not see much improvement during the first two weeks, I just stayed on the induction diet. I stayed less than 50 carbs per day...often times less.

I can not recall the amount of calories, but I think it was well within est. Adtkins rules...

Any suggestions??

Get another doctor. Get a FULL thyroid panel run (include FREE T3, FREE T4, TSH, reverse T3 etc...). Many GPs don't even know how to interpret basic thyroid tests correctly and won't even consider a TSH below 4.5 as abnormal. If your TSH is above 2, insist on seeing an endocrinologist to discuss it. Get an insulin test as well (not just a fasting glucose challenge, but get insulin response measured too). Check testosterone, including FREE T and SHBG.

Don't do Atkin's again unless you plan on staying on a variation of it for life (in other words low carbs). Coming off of low carb diets is a recipe to blow up, and it knocks your metabolism around too.

That's just for starters.

re:doctors screening

I had my doc do all those test...and I was marginal, but barely acceptable in all. ..often times right on the barrier on the norm.

The reason I dropped Adtkins is because it did not work...but I am great at a diet. If it works, I can discipline myself to anything.
On less than 2000 calories and 50 g carbs per day I did not lose weight over a 90 period...save a pound or two...off of 235!

My true problem is I have no metabolism...and therfore can't lose weight no matter what I do. My best buddy is a professional trainer (very well educated too) and he is mystified too. I am prepared to do anything..nothing is worse than no hope.
Ideas are needed!!!

"I had my doc do all those test...and I was marginal, but barely acceptable in all. ..often times right on the barrier on the
norm. ".......................Please do yourself a favor and see an endocrinologist. If you were borderline 'normal' on more thanon of those tests then there is a good chance there is a problem that can be fixed. GPs misdiagnose (or leave UNdiagnosed) a lot of problems, especially with thyroid tests. They very rarely perform insulin resistance tests at all unless you hold a gun to their heads. Do you have the results so you can post the values??

You said you made a "clean run" at Atkins, but I don't think you actually read the book. Is that the case? If so, I suggest that you buy the book and follow the program.

The book instructs you to go on a "fat fast" if you don't achieve ketosis during induction. Also, induction isn't <50 gms of carbs, it's <20gms. I think you were probably taking in too many carbs for ketosis to kick in.

Look, I'm not a huge fan of Atkins for long term, or for a bodybuilder. But if you really want to lose weight, go buy the book, read it, and follow it. Drink lots of water and take a good multivitamin. If it doesn't work for you, at least then you can say you made a clean run at it.

Good luck.

Hi...

I did buy the book, and did it with supervision of Doctor and highly educated personal trainer...but you are right about the number of carbs ...I just recalled from memory and I was wrong.

Thier thought was, if mistakes were made, that I ate too little.

My T3 test results were as follows: 0.78, with normal ranges between 0.45 and 1.37.

My REVERSE T3 results were 10, with normal ranges of 10 to 24.

My research says if that ratio is 10 to 1, then a reverse t3 dominance is present, and T3 treatment should be taken. Especially when considering my body temp is hardly ever of 97.5.

Any thoughts....and thanks for your idea so far...means a lot to me!

Heres some drastic advice.... like the other guys said, go find another doctor. You have to have a metabolism, or you would be dead, however, your BMR might have slowed down due to any number of things. However, if this were the case, then you'd almost certainly be more than 250lbs...... I would seek the help of a good endocrinologist, and go see a different general practitioner. You said yourself that your doc doesn't relly seem to be all that interested, so find someone who is. If your dieting has yielded a mere four pounds, and you really truly were sticking with your diet, then there is something chemically wrong.

Hey..I agree. Thanks for the advice.

I spent all day on the computer, and am convinced I have Wilson's Syndrome (www.wilsonsyndrome.com). That fits me to a T.

I have contacted a doc that is familiar with this...I sure hope it works.

Are you familiar with this?

Well, I'm not familliar with that one in particular. I would have hypothesized that you had something going on with your thyroid.... So, I'm glad that you got in touch with a doctor who knows more about Wilsons Syndrome than me ;-)

Good move, but just a tip.... When you go to see this doctor, don't push the idea that Wilsons is the only possibility, or he might just agree and give you the treatment to shut you up.... Go along with the tests, and when they come back, then suggest the possibility if he hasn't already deduced the possibility of this syndrome ;-)

good luck

Shane
