Aspirating and in a vein

So I have read quite a few different opinions on this site and other sites, and it seems to be split on people who aspirate and people who do not. Some say its pointless and doctors don't even do it while others say its better safe than sorry and only takes an extra second.

My question mainly revolves around determining if you are in a vein or not.

I have only ever injected into glutes, and I aspirate each time that I do it. 95% of the time I didn't see anything, but there was a time in which I pulled back on the plunger quite hard and a little bit of blood did go into the syringe.

I followed the proper procedure, pulled out and chose a different spot. However, if I was really in a vain wouldn't quite a bit of blood go into the syringe with barely having to pull on the plunger at all? From my understanding, if you are in a vein and you barely pull back on the plunger it's quite noticeable that you're in a vein.

Could it be that the blood that went into my syringe was just from something else?

I have gotten a little blood before in my glute, but like you say it took effort to pull it in. I think maybe I hit a vein on the way in, but the needle wasn't directly inside it when I aspirated.

For the record, yes, when you are IN a vein, the blood comes with little effort. You could probably fill a 3cc syringe in about 3 seconds. Maybe less. And it feels like zero resistance.

But you did the right thing. Always redo it. No blood = good spot.

Tony.

EDIT: Take a syringe with a needle (same as you use for injection) and draw water into it from a glass/cup/whatever. This is very close to what aspirating in a vein/artery feels like.

Aspirating in a muscle feels very similar to drawing your oil based gear from the vial.

Okay that's what I thought. I was just wondering if you pull back hard enough are you bound to get SOME blood from either hitting one on the way in, hitting a capillary, or just pulling blood from the muscles....I was pulling pretty damn hard.

Thanks for the input gents.

You either nicked a vein or pierced a vein and the needle just passed through so no worries you did the right thing. Better safe than sorry.

I had a real little bit sift in, and I kept injecting and was ok.
