aspirate? how much?

I have researched injections and see that it is a good idea to aspirate. However, I am unclear as to exactly how much you pull back when you aspirate before an injection? From my understanding if you see blood in the syringe you should change the needle? Any clarification would be a great help to me.

If you have injected into a vein, you will see blood come onto the syringe once you begin aspirating. If you have drawn back a little and nothing has come out, you are ok to inject.

Please, anyone correct me if I am wrong.

I think you will get mixed answers on this.
I personally, have just reinjected. I would clean off a new spot with running alcohol, then aspirate and reinject.

As far as aspirating, I've seen people tug back on the needle as far back as half an inch or more. You'll usually see bubbles and maybe some liquid enter the barrel, which I am assuming is intramuscular fluid. As for the needle, it usually a good idea to replace it with a fresh new sharp pin. They are so cheap I can't see why you wouldn't.

If I am not in a vein, I usually see the beginning of a small air bubble forming when I tug on the plunger.

There are lots of threads about injecitng on this site. Also check out www.spotinjections.com for good info on sites on your body to inject.

spotinjection.com is such a creepy site. i really wish there was some further details/instructions included (as text) instead of just pictures. i don't feel confident about hitting the chest and traps, for instance, from just those pics.

Well said, it is a little creepy.
I like the delt, glute, and quad pictures though. They show exactly which muscle and where on it to aim for.

thats about what i would say

ditto ditto

If you're in a vein, blood should appear in the needle's drawing base almost right away on a tugback as small as 1/10 CC.

If I hit a vein and see a little blood in the syringe upon aspirating, I usually just pull the pin out maybe 1/4" and aspirate again. Usually there will be no more blood and I just proceed with the injection in the same location at a slightly shallower depth. Has worked ok for me. When It doesn't work, I have pulled out and cleaned a new spot and reinjected with a new pin (using the same pin works ok too but it's less sharp than on the first poke so it will hurt slightly more)

you don't have to have someone with there foot on your ass leaning back and pulling on the plunger. just pull on it a little, if it doesn't go back easily and you don't see blood you aren't in a vein.

how about you aspirate no blood comes out and you still get a nasty knot for about 4 days in your legs?? ED jabs are killing me
