asking the doc for a blood test?

Can I specify to my doc that I want to be tested for certain things in particular WITHOUT them running a full blown blood work with all hormone levels ect. ect? Basically I want to be tested for Hep. C, HIV(ya never know) and have my liver and kindey values checked. I dont want my test, estro, lsh, fsh, thyroid ect. checked. Is this realistic? Can I request this and have it covered by my insurance?

That shouldn't be a problem. I went in last fall and had blood drawn to test my liver and for HIV. I actually wanted a full workup, but they said that that was more involved and my insurance probably wouldn't want to pick up the tab.

They checked my kidneys with a urine analysis.

those are basic tests, even to cover the cost yourself for all of those test I would guess would be around $3-400 or less. There is a basic Hepatitis panel and HIV test.... liver and kidney function are basic tests as well....you may want your cholesterol checked, knowing which board you are posting from....a urinalysis is a very sensitive test to check kidney function, if it's normal, you don't need the blood test. Probably don't need the liver test either, just cholesterol.

There are independant labs that will check these tests, though I'm not too sure how to guide you on that one. Check the yellow pages. Though if there are abnormailites, you ought to follow-up with an MD so he/she can interpret them.

Any MD should have no problem (primary care doc, that is....don't go to the emergency department...this isn't an emergency, plus that will cost you a bundle). testing you for Hepatitis and HIV.....and you can ask about liver and kidney while there.

As far as lh, fsh, test, etc.....those are so specific and costly noone would check those unless they were looking for something. It's really not even an issue, don't worry about it.
