Here is the official word from MD (Muscular Development):

I spoke with Steven Salmon today, business partner of the late Art Atwood.

He called MD to set the record straight on a few things being said about the passing of Art.

Steven advised, “Sunday, at about 2:30PM, Art was walking through the pool area of his residence when he had a massive heart attack.

We are not sure if he was going for a swim or just passing through the area, but he was not at a party. He was at the pool area of the condo where he lives.

Two residents who were at the pool saw him fall in and immediately pulled him out. They were able to revive him and get the paramedics, but it was too late. The damage had already been done.”

I asked Steven if Art died there or on the way to the hospital. He said he was unsure, because those details had not been released. He will update us further as the story develops.

Art is survived by both of his parents, a brother and a sister. He will be buried in Wisconsin.

A candle light vigil will be held at his home in Dallas the weekend after the Olympia.

Steven also advised that Art's business, Pro Supplements, will carry on with business as usual, keeping Art's vision alive.

"Art died at the hospital.

The coroner’s report shows that he died of heart attack.

He unknowingly suffered a minor heart attack about a month ago. As it turns out, heart disease does run in his family."

Art was 37 years old. He won his IFBB pro card at the 2001 NPC Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia. His professional bodybuilding debut was the 2001 Toronto Pro where he took 1st place, joining an elite club of pro bodybuilders who won their first pro show. His first IFBB Mr. Olympia came in 2002, where he placed a respectable 12th. During the span of his career, Art competed in 19 shows as a pro bodybuilder, and retired from the stage in 2006.

RIP Art.

I pretty much figured this would be the response I would get if I had posted the thread in AAS section.

Art was a mass monster. At 5'11" his off season weight was around 330 lbs.

I didn't know him, but I also don't think his death can be blamed (entirely) on steroids.

330 pounds is a hundred pounds more than a human body is meant to carry. I don't care if he was 6% bf. It's too much size and it's dangerous. He took his chances. He lost. May he find his happiness in the next life.

whether its muscle or fat he was a good 115 pounds overweight at his height. people need to understand that being overweight is gonna strain your organs no matter what.

endurance athletes are underweight and have terrific heart health but even they over exercise and that can be bad too. and plus you have to deal with other issues like leg injuries etc.

there is a happy medium in between but that doesn't satisfy the commited athlete, i know for me I want to get bigger and bigger whilst keeping my bf down.. and at my height I am already carrying too much muscle then my body would like
