As an FYI... it is a VERY VERY bad thing when the media announces that the police have someone in custody in these types of cases. There is always a premature desire to "catch the guy that did it" - leading the media to jump on every detention as the culprit. Unfortunately, what this does is as soon as the media announces that there is an arrest (in this case detention) all TIPS dry up. Once someone is known to be in custody everyone wants to assume that this is the guy who did it... and tipsters with valuable information no longer phone the police. There are currently between 10-50 men being detained as possible suspects in this case. This 27 year old is just one of them. By the media loudly ballyhooing his detention in order to sell news... they could very well be helping the real killer escape.

Obviously I hope this guy is the one who did it and they've caught him - but I don't want the leads to dry up till we know for sure.

Most interesting is how they zeroed in on him. His apartment is very close to where they found the girl's body. The police believed for a variety of reasons that the killer was very familiar with the trail/wooded area where her body was found.

They got a tip from the guy's apartment manager. She said that Tuesday night after the girl had been kidnapped he just kept walking around and around and around his light green car. He matched the description of the kidnapper and so did his car - and she couldn't think of any reason a guy would keep circling his own car like that (i.e., as though he was studying it to see if there were any outward signs of evidence.)

So an alert citizen's observation leads to a tip.

On questioning - the guys brilliant story for where he was during the entire time of the kidnapping - "I was at the mall."

I don't know how quickly they can nail down a guy with forensic evidence - but if it is him - we need to skip the trial and just burn him on in the street.

There's been 3 high profile cases so far this year -- Runnion, Van Dam and Smart.

It seems like every year we have a few high profile kidnappings. A slow news season is to blame.

And yes, it is a fucking crisis when we have sick fucks living in our country stealing kids and killing them.

Vixen, I did a lot of work for the National Center for Missing and Abused Children during the '90s. I was going to write and produce their afterschool special on their Kids-and-Company program... which is their in-school course for preventing child molestation/abuse/abduction.

The thing that was most educational for me was learning how RARE stranger abductions really are. Most kids who are kidnapped are kidnapped by a non-custodial parent. True stranger kidnappings usually number less than 50 each year for the whole country.

That is why it is very easy for the media to focus on a few "high profile" cases. Any stranger abduction case immediately becomes "high profile"... especially if the child is not quickly recovered.

Little story for you all....Something that I also recalled that makes me angry as hell.

I have a client who owns a pawn shop here in town. Guess what? The police have a better tracking system of people who PAWN shit than that of tracking CONVICTED CHILD ABUSERS OR MISSING KIDS!

The process: (Anything pawned over $100.00 is the rule, if I'm not mistaken)

When you pawn ANYTHING in Ohio(perhaps in other states as well) you are asked for a photo ID,your driver's lics., your picture is taken in the PAWN SHOP, the pawn shop owner SENDS ALL this info to the local police.

Are ya feeling as ill as I was to find this out? We place more importance on stolen property than of KNOWN, CONVICTED CHILD ABUSERS! GOD DAMNIT ALL TO HELL...WHAT ABOUT OUR KIDS AND A NATIONAL NET WORK FOR THESE FREAKS WHO ARE CONVICTED OF SAID ABUSE?
