Well today was my 1st day of RIP and have the whole weekend off...Monday we take our PT test and will lose most of the class that day...Hopefully I wont get recycled. We have 149 starting out....THe last class started 110 and graduated 52

so if history is any indication we will lose alot of people...Keep me in your prayers cause I dont want to spend anymore time here then I have too. If things work out then I'll be here 2 more weeks for a commo course before going to Battalion. We have 7 commo guys which means we have a good say to where we will go if we all make it. I'm debating between 1st battalion in Savannah or 2nd Bat at Ft lewis

Anyone near Savannah GA or near Ft lewis WA????Would like to know the scoop from a locals point of view

Try to drop these two words from your vocabulary: "if" and "hopefully"

Good Luck!

Dude you'll be fine.

I live 90 mins from Savannah now and have been there 10000000000 times. I was stationed at Lewis. what do you want to know?

IMO I would think Ft. Lewis would be nicer, but I was at Hood my entire Army career then at Riley (YUCK) as dependent so nothing (except Ft. Polk) can be that bad! Good luck!

I am at Fort Hood right now, and NOTHING sounds better than the cool weather I experienced in the summers I spent at Fort Lewis.

This man is correct. Lewis has very nice summers...low 80's temps, sun comes up real early....not much rain (although other seasons make up for it..)

Good luck Tx. I don't know how long your training is, but I probably will be in PI if it's any longer than 2 weeks. Once again good luck.

Matt and ttpkg is right, if you like cool summers and the Cascade mountains...Ft. Lewis is the spot...Savannah is one hot bitch in the summer....Good luck either way.

do you have to go in infantry in order to get a shot at RIP?

No. It depends on which MOS you are and how willing the powers-to-be are willing to send you. I went as a 2LT 11b, then I transitioned to ADA after a back injury rather than be medically boarded out as a captain. When I was at the transition course at FT Bliss they weren't letting 2LTs from the ADA go even if they were going to ligt divisions like the 10th Mountain or the 101st. Ask me or Matt about it if your career path is that of an officer. RANGER and some of the other guys were some DAMN GOOD NCO's who have/had a lot of experience.

did you get much traveling to Asia when you were with 2nd? I've never been out to the west coast, I would enjoy hitting up the mt's year round for hikes, camping, hunting, some snowboarding would be nice as well...I'm going to assume that they have some good fishing spots as well there. I'm favoring 2nd right now just for the idea of getting out west. Who know's how many chances I'll get to go out there in the future.

ttlpkg how are the schools there around the base?I will have to look more into them when I get out there since i'll have a 3rd grader to think about when I get there.

Was it a problem ever heading up to Canada for a weekend? With all the training they are telling us to gear up for I'm not going to expect much time to think about a vacation anytime soon so hopefully a weekend trip to canada would be alright.

What about Seatle or Tacoma? anything worth driving to Oregon for?

Pros and Cons of Ft lewis would be appreciated

My advice for you....Once you get through RIP and join your Batt. I wouldn't plan too much for the future with all that is going on in the world right now....JMO

Schools are nice on post, but you have to live on-post to get in them. Puyallup is a nearby town with a great school system if you're off post. I went to BC a few times to camp or visit. Seattle is awesome, I went for Seahawks/Sonics/Mariners games and museums/shows. Tacoma has a nice club scene. Regrettably I never made it to Oregon. Adventure type recreation is abundant with Mount Rainer, Lakes, etc. Great Trout fishing abounds. Lots of good gyms too. You'll love it.
