I've been working as a medical transcriptionist for over five years. I'm one of the best subcontractors in the branches I work in primarily (neurology and neurosurgery), and have no certification.

Talking to a neurosurgical resident when my mother was in the hospital with a ruptured cerebral aneurysm was mildly amusing. When he asked me what field of medicine I worked in and I responded that I was a medical transcriptionist he was actually shocked.

I seriously love talking to doctors, they are some of the smartest and most curious people around. Some of my docs understand that sometimes they're basically there to vet my diagnoses/treatments. I think they generally get the point that I am also making it easier on them by doing all the homework. That then buys us some time to shoot the breeze.

I've never had a very good relationship with a physician (except my chiropractor). I always seemed to run into the ones who think I don't have the brains to tell them what is wrong.

As a transcriptionist, you're their "employee" and frankly they're some of the meanest fuckers to work for there is (which is why I would never work directly with the physician's office). I've run into a lot of intellectual snobbery with physicians (particularly the younger ones). It's alright as long as they think you're "smart enough" to talk to them or are yourself in a branch of the medical field they respect, but if they realize you never went higher than high school they're amazed you manage to tie your own shoes.
