Are marriages better or worse now?

Sure, the divorce rate is up but is that because:

- the "empowerment" movement made it okay to leave your SO if the marriage was multi-orgasmic?
- people were never really that happy, so its more socially ok to leave?
- people are more picky?
- people get drunk more?
- the intraweb is more prevalent with porn?
- people are more into their careers then marriage?

The first Gay wedding I went to was a blast! It was on July 4th and there was a big New England Lobster Fest for the reception. They now have a beautiful daughter and are living peacefully. I see it as more women for us straight guys, so I hope they all get married.

i think people nowadays get married for a lot of the wrong reasons. I know plenty of people who i'm convinced got married because they were to scared to be alone, rather than getting married because they really loved the person.

it has also become far more socially acceptable......broken marriages are the new black.

Well, sorry to disagree however I think you will find on average,

Most Gay Men are good lookin..., but most Gay Women are Farkin Homely (except in magazines) - I think we have the edge.

I guess in the past marriages stayed together more often because there was stigma against divorcee's, women "having" to work, etc. Then there was the "free love" era, then there was the "me" era. But at the end of the day, it still falls on the couple being honest, responsible and true to themselves. Sometimes things just turn out differently, but people still get so caught up in things that are not as important (and let's face it, the Internet opens up so much more temptation & distraction that its even harder) and the people they should be talking to, getting to know better and confiding in should be the spouse and not some guy/girl you meet on line.

Are marriages better these days? I have lots of friends who are happily married and raising fantastic kids. I have friends who haven't been so lucky and who have fucked up their marriages because they couldn't communicate or just really needed *someone* (whoever) to take care of them. That is what makes me sad though - it always seems like the one you are supposed to love is the one who gets taken the most for granted. Its always so much easier to talk to / confide in other people who you really don't have commitments to as well. At the end of the day being comfortable w/ yourself as a person who can function on his / her own and also the ability to communicate w/ the other person.

Maybe marriage hasn't changed so much as what is "acceptable" in society that distracts from those basic things - responsibility, honesty & communication.

Yes, most people are afraid to be alone.

Also, alot of women are more interested in finding a guy who will look good in the wedding pic. (meets their qualifications) When, the should wait and find someone that love and like. They are more interested in seeing that the world sees them having a perfect life...than actually waiting and finding it.

Guys get married for the pussy. (why we do pretty much anything) Girls know this...use this...than shut it down after they get married.

It is much easier (and in some cases encouraged) to take the easy way out these days than to honor a commitment. Which seems to be the cause of a lot of problems, even besides failed marriages.

I almost have 2 of my married friends to fight fire with fire...They both have good jobs and their wives don't work. (nice house..nice car....etc) But, both guys complain that after they got married they hear...."I have a headache"..."I'm too tired"...etc.

I almost have them convinced to stop making the payments on their car, insurance, credit cards, etc. Then, when their wives ask why they didn't pay those bills for them say........"I had a headache"..."I was too tired"...etc.

personally i think marraiges are worse nowdays....too many alternatives, competition, too many distractions.... life is so fast paced, expensive-disposable. I feel that we have lost value of human nature and we dont spend the time we need to to get to know and understand who we are with/ not only that but with ourselves more importantly....we worry more about the surface and how 'it' looks rather than whats up inside....

the stresses of todays world and the uncertainty of security are huge factors...you are correct, however this is only a fraction of the equation....i think this siuation puts many in a survival mode, thus creating a "live for the moment" type of mentality- again, marriage being a proposition for the long haul, will not sustain...

The more I think about marriage the more I want it even though im a long way off it. Im not phased I can spend the rest of my life with a woman that I love, always wanted children 1 boy 1 girl if Im lucky.

It's just that divorce and cheating scare the crap out of me, those are the two things that would shatter me completely and I've already witnessed one of them first hand, dont want to go through that again.
