are incline presses REALLY nessecary?

i guess this brings me to my next question;

why do most powerlifting routines / plyo routines emphasize flat bench as the primary chest exercise and not inclines?

Actually You have to look at flat bench press as a whole body move, that's why it is a one of the three lifts on powerlifting competitions. Inclined is used on powerlifting routines quite often as an assistance movement.

Because flat bench is a competition lift for powerlifters, which is because it allows a heavier weight to be lifted than incline. There's obviously a fair amount of specificity to each version, and if the flat bench is the one you're performing in competitions, that's obviously the one you'd spend the most time with.

I'm a firm advocate of the incline press.
